Using a method of teaching pioneered in 1960s Australia, Aquakiddies/babies aims to introduce little ones to swimming in a manner both fun and informative. Programme deviser Julie-Ann James has over 25 years’ experience in the field and was one of the first children to benefit from the training, which sees tutors use babies’ natural breath-holding response to water to gradually improve their confidence. Classes are designed to be relaxed by featuring both training and playing elements, and feature an emphasis on buoyancy aids rather than armbands. Parents are also encouraged to get involved in sessions, so that they can learn correct and safe methods for teaching outside the class environment. The company boasts venues across the UK including Birmingham, London and Ireland, and also regularly hosts underwater photoshoots to snap tots as they dive and paddle.
