From Our Editors

Thai Elephant Restaurant in Richmond was the first Thai restaurant in the area and serves its clients very original dishes from Thailand. This is owing to the fact that the proprietor conducts research on various oriental spices to come up with desirable flavors of Thai food. Going through the menu, clients will notice the use of a variety of herbs and spices, which are all natural. These include fresh chili, ginger, garlic, coriander, galangal, lime leaves, lemongrass and basil leaves amongst others. Food items also have unique names that clients may never have heard of before. An example would be the 'Volcano Chicken', which is served with sauce and flaming liquor. Another original dish name is the 'Seafood Bomb', which serves prawn balls, drunken noodles, and sticky rice for glutinous kind. Rich menu in a relaxed ambiance Clients of Thai Elephant Restaurant can taste various Thai soups, salads, vegetables and curries, which are made of meat or seafood with vegetables and coconut milk. The accompaniments for these curries are mostly rice and noodles, which are prepared with various cooking techniques including frying and steaming in coconut milk. All these dishes are served in a relaxed environment at the Thai Elephant Restaurant, which is designed for individual or group meals during lunch and dinner. It remains open seven days a week, and during lunchtime, which starts at 12 noon and ends at 2:30 pm, express menus are available for clients who are short on time. Clients can also enjoy late dining at this restaurant.

We felt we were treated as second class citizens because we were there on a voucher. Little things like, not asking us how we enjoyed our food, not giving us a little chocolate with our bill while all other patrons were given one. It was cold inside, no atmosphere and staff were not very friendly. Very short-sighted of them as we live nearby and love Thai food. We would have gone back often if we'd had a better experience.

The night we went, I think a lot of people were redeeming their Groupon vouchers. Service at the beginning of the evening was very good, but we waited 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared (even stacking them in the centre of the table as a hint), and then waited a further 15 minutes to order dessert. The couple next to us were asked what they'd like to order - and they hadn't even been given menus! It was funny to us as we weren't on any kind of time deadline, but a pretty restaurant and good food is outweighed by sloppy (though very charming!) service, and anyone in a rush would be libel to get rather frustrated!

The boss made the whole business of the bill most complicated. The receipt was comprised of two clear distinctions - the actual price, the price we paid and the amount saved. The service gratuity was based on the "real" price of the meal - and we had a few extras - and therefore came to over £9, which we would not have normally left as a tip. When we left the boss said he wouldn't be doing the Groupon deal again as it caused too many problems. In our opinion many of those were self-induced.

The service was very, very slow.

The service was slow, the staff seemed indifferent and they made several mistakes with our order. There wasn't a clear indication of which dishes were included in the Groupon offer. The owner/manager simply went through the menu in a very offhand manor pointing out which dishes were and were not included, which we then just had to remember. I have returned, as a fully paying customer, to other restaurants that I have tried out initially with a Groupon voucher but will not be returning to the Thai Elephant, even if there were to be another offer.
