Always check your bookings before your day of arrival, we had booked a spa & afternoon tea for 4, when I called in the Portland Hotel for more information the week before our booking, they had no record of my reservation & informed me that the spa was closed. Luckily I had time to sort things out with the operations manager & our booking went ahead ok.

Tiny gym, only a plunge pool, not worth getting wet for. The staff in the restaurant were lovely but the sandwiches weren't - very boring. Not even any butter with the scone.

I recently purchased a groupon for a spa day with afternoon tea, we we're quite disappointed with the facilities the hotel had to offer. The description and the pictures of the hotel we're nothing like the facilities on offer. The fasilities were very dated, the changing rooms were tiny, my mother was changing near the sinks as there was no room and banged her head on a bag dispenser and need up with a black eye! There was only two showers for guests to use, they gym had hardly any equipment in there, the jacuzzi was so small we had to take it in turns, overall it just wasn't the experience we was expecting. It was a birthday present for my mother and wanted something special, will not be visiting this hotel anytime soon. The afternoon tea was very nice though, our waitress on the day couldn't do enough for us so thank you for that.

Afternoon tea was decent, however having given 2 hours notice that one us was vegetarian, I was told that there were some chicken sandwiches but the rest would be vegetarian. Turned out to be turkey, chicken, prawn, tuna and just a few cheese - a little disappointing. Also it is a bit strong to sell it as a spa day when the pool is just about big enough for 3 people to stand in, and certainly not big enough for a swim.

We were expecting a shared sauna and were disappointed that this was not the case. I had treated my partner for his birthday and chose not to use this facility as it was segregated in to male and female

Tea for 2 was plentiful and fantastic however the health and fitness section very small and in need of major refurbishment. The number of small flies in the changing room was disgusting. Pool very small and separate saunas I found to be odd. I spent all of 20 minutes in the health and fitness centre as I was extremely disappointed. Overall would not visit again as for what seems a lovely hotel but has a major flaw in its health and fitness suite.

When we made our way to the spa area, the changing rooms were filthy and needs a complete revamp. Would definitely NOT go there again!
