From Our Editors

The Yorkshire Dales await exploration at a short drive from the Black Swan, where Druids Temple is easily reachable by foot. For those wishing to stretch their legs a little further, there are various circular walks which centre around the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey. North Yorkshire's chocolate-box villages are dotted along various routes, with cafes and gift shops along the way. The nearest town is Masham, where popular attractions include the Black Sheep Brewery and the seventh-century architecture of St Mary's Church. Guest accommodation features king-sized beds, en suites, tea and coffee-making facilities, LCD TVs and views of the moors. The 17th-century public house within the hotel offers a selection of local ales including the famed Black Sheep Ale, alongside a fully stocked bar. Food is traditional and locally-sourced, utilising local cheese, ales and steaks in the chef's creations. Cooked breakfasts help kick off mornings, with options such as the Yorkshire cooked breakfast, eggs benedict and grilled kippers alongside juices, teas and coffees.

The food, staff and view were excellent. The only thing we were very disappointed about was the price of the soft drinks, rediculously expensive. My half a lime and soda was the same cost as the lager!! £1.90, hubby's pint was £3.80!!! Shocking and such a shame really. We will try the regular menu at some point because we enjoyed the Sunday roast so much.

Meals were overpriced in the pub for what is essentially standard bar fodder of indifferent quality. Beer was overpriced at £3.50 a pint. Just got home and paid £2.70 for Great Newsomme Frothingham Best (The Worlds best bitter). Understaffed in the restaurant for both breakfast and evening meals, although the staff did an excellent job. Would not eat in the restaurant again for evening meal. Nobody asked whether we had enjoyed our stay upon leaving and just took our money.

Nice large bedroom. It was also extremely we'll lit, which was a pleasant surprise. Nice clean bathroom with an efficient shower over a good sized bath. Breakfast was good. Would happily stay again.

Good food, excellent location for visiting the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. The rooms were spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Loved the shower.
