From Our Editors

The Yorkshire Dales await exploration at a short drive from the Black Swan, where Druids Temple is easily reachable by foot. For those wishing to stretch their legs a little further, there are various circular walks which centre around the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey. North Yorkshire's chocolate-box villages are dotted along various routes, with cafes and gift shops along the way. The nearest town is Masham, where popular attractions include the Black Sheep Brewery and the seventh-century architecture of St Mary's Church. Guest accommodation features king-sized beds, en suites, tea and coffee-making facilities, LCD TVs and views of the moors. The 17th-century public house within the hotel offers a selection of local ales including the famed Black Sheep Ale, alongside a fully stocked bar. Food is traditional and locally-sourced, utilising local cheese, ales and steaks in the chef's creations. Cooked breakfasts help kick off mornings, with options such as the Yorkshire cooked breakfast, eggs benedict and grilled kippers alongside juices, teas and coffees.

Food was nice enough.....when we got it. Service was diabolical. We had another Groupon to go towards an evening meal there but didn’t use it, it was that bad.

Friendly staff, delicious food and range of gins which suited me down to the ground! Portions were big and I counted 8 different vegetables on the plate! Will book again soon!

The inn offers starters, mains and desserts with a ‘specials’ board too and the bars offers local craft beers. I chose the roast chicken dinner with Yorkshire pudding. I counted 9 vegetables to go with it and a lovely rich flavourful gravy. All of this beautifully presented with the vegetables served in a open porcelain turine and all hot all at the same time. It was the best Sunday Lunch away from home I’ve had in a long time. I did not have a starter but wanted a dessert. The word I was searching for was ‘homemade’. I asked if any desserts were ‘homemade’ and they were honest enough to inform me ‘no’ and apologised. I have purchased another voucher to repeat my experience and a work colleague has too on my recommendation. Staff were polite and helpful. It is not what I would call ‘flash’ venue. It is a cosy inn with a log fire burner and wooden beams. It looks as though they also have land at the back for tourers to pitch up to enjoy the locality too to diversify their business.
