From Our Editors

Built in 1905, Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway was originally intended for the transportation of the raw materials required for the paper manufacture and the finished product created at the paper mill at Kemsley Down. Nowadays, it continues to use the steam engines and rolling stock from 1969 to introduce the sites around its path to tourists and railway-aficionados. Visitors can delight in the views of the century-old Milton Regis Viaduct and the natural beauty of Milton Creek Country Park during their journey and then visit Kemsley Down and see the old paper mill for themselves.

Lovely friendly informal atmosphere. Not the most picturesque route, but an interesting view of the town from another perspective. And of course it's original purpose was industrial rather than tourism. Well done to the volunteers for preserving its heritage. An enjoyable experience & excellent value for money.

The initial setting as explained on the website is basic, a small waiting area but the other end gives you opportunity to look at a few engines, a visit to the tea shop or a look round the gift shop. The train journey is good, the engine looks well maintained and the carriages are fine. It’s a sweet little journey for a minimal costs. It’s not a full day out but definitely a good little activity.
