Perfect location for main shopping area and across the road from the Station. Took less than 10 minutes to walk into town. The hotel itself and our room was very warm and welcoming. Our allocated room (N0 9) was ideal for an overnight stay it was up 3 short flights of stairs which wasnt a problem.( A lift was available for the less able) The room was Shower room toileteries were of good quality. En-suite bathroom (no bath) it had a heated towel rail and large radiator in the bedroom itself. Full English breakfast (thick rashers of bacon) was hot and perfectly cooked and the young lady who doubled as bar staff was friendly and efficient. No complaints at all other than the noise from the Disco in the bar downstairs on the Saturday night which went on til way past midnight. However this wasn't a reason for complaint as one would expect such occasions to take place in a busy pub. We just turned the TV up louder and went to sleep later !! Well done GW Hotel.

The groupon offer of a night stay at the GW hotel conjured up a visit to a hotel with some history and atmosphere appertaining to the great Western Railway. On arrival we were dissapointed to view a very tired looking building. We arrived just before 10am. There was a note on the door with a moblie telephone number to call which I did and was dealt with politley and graciously. It was suggested we enter from the rear of the building once we had parked the car. On entering the bar we were impressed with the decor and obvious refurbishment that had recently taken place. From an uncertain initial impression we felt a litlle more optimistic. We were greeted and fully informed of available eateries and directions to places of interest which we were going to partake of during the day. it was at this point that we were told there was a private party at the hotel in the evening. It was agreed that we would return later to book in. We returned around 2pm and were shown to our room. Unfortuantely it was at that point that any optimism was challenged as to our decision to stay at the GW. On leaving the bar area for the entrance to the accomodation we entered the dark side. Tired shabby filthy frayed and stained carpet led us upstairs to a seedy and wholly depressing room that was only lightened by clean white linen and towels. We decided that as we were there and had booked in we would venture out for the afternoon to enjoy Lydiard park and have an evening meal.We returned to the hotel to relax at 8.45 pm to be met in the car park by numbers of party goers all heading into the hotel and the sound of a disco echoing throughout. We entered the hotel by the residents entrance and were hit by a wall of disco music. On climbing the stairs and entering the room we were astounded to realise that the volume was in no way diminished by the walls or floors and that we were in fact directly above the disco itself. We could not hear each other speak let alone watch any televison and certainly unable to relax. It was at this point that we agreed that this situation was not something we were prepared to put up with and decided to leave. The GW is actually not a hotel, it is a pub with rooms. If rooms are offered then residents should be able to relax without interuption from discos, bands noisy staff or other residents. If this cannot be offered then it is incomprehensible to think that anyone would be prepared to pay good money to stay somewhere where they will be completely disrupted and disturbed. If the hotel wishes to continue to offer residential stays it has much work to do to ensure that residents get value for money and at the very least are able to spend a quiet evening in their room with no interruption. All in all it was a huge disappointment and a waste of our money. I have already contacted the hotel by telephone and have requested a full refund. We shall be wary of purchasing future groupon offers if, as is the case this time, our expectations are not met.

Says it all in my comment above...threadbare carpet, in dire need of updating, (decorating) windows look like they've never been cleaned, looking out onto a roof that's littered, lighting in the bedroom area grim, getting ready for a night out the only mirror which had any good light was the bathroom, but no good when the other person is using it! No bin in the bathroom, shelf above sink on a slant so you can't rest anything on it without it falling down into the sink, toothbrushes, soap etc! the list is endless! Would have been very upset if having had to pay the going rate for this place...infact, I wouldn't have, I'd have probably walked out and asked for my money back on arrival!

Size of room was excellent and comfy bed. excellent breakfast included in the price. the only issue was the noise outside at night. great value for money with groupon voucher. we wish we had booked another nights stay.

No proper reception, so had no idea where to go on arrival, only person around was a bar maid, who doubled as a receptionist. The bedrooms were well equiped but in need of a bit of spring cleaning, badly stained carpets.Posistion of hotel is very good and the bar area is tastefully decorated, but sadly something seems to be lacking.
