From Our Editors

The Lodge in the Vale is a contemporary retreat nestled in the heart of the Lake District. Surrounded by some of the highest peaks in England, a variety of nearby walking routes guide visitors around the remarkable landscape of the area. The town of Keswick is only a short drive away with its cafes, shops and galleries, while lakes Thirlmere and Ullswater also lie in close proximity. The nearby King’s Head Hotel is under the same ownership, and offers all-day meals from its gastro bar and dining restaurant, the St. Johns. The hotel’s light and spacious interiors offer panoramic views of the rolling countryside, with the two-storey glass atrium housing the reception and acting as the heart of this modern space. All bedrooms feature internet access and flat-screen satellite television, as well as en suite bathrooms stocked with complimentary toiletries. An coffee shop, open 10am-9pm serves continental breakfasts in the mornings and snacks throughout the day, while evening entertainment can also be sought here with the fully licensed bar serving a wide variety of beers, wines and spirits.

Great place to stay. Basic but clean and all you need after a days walking. You need a car or a taxi to get to Keswick as no meals on site

Don,t be concerned if it seems a bit out of the way. Access to Keswick and Threlkeld(excellent pub Horse and Farrier) is straightforward and once the A591 reopens Grasmere is close as well. Kings Head at Thirlspot has excellent beer and food and is not far to walk. The local buses provide an excellent service and the bus stop is only a few yards away so there is no need to use the car if you don't want to.

The rooms are compact but are clean and fine for a base. The only food available is breakfast, so you need to go out for dinner, if that suits then it's fine. The staff are friendly and helpful

Really great customer service. Everyone was great and welcoming on reception and love Yogi, the chocolate labarador. 2Our room was very well presented and comfortable. It was pretty wet whilst we were there so we would have welcomed a drying out room. We had to dry our kit in our room which was a bit messy and not a great way to ensure that the rooms stay in their present pristine condition. It would have also been great to have a bench just outside the Lodge to put your boots on and take off. There are some fabulous walks from the Lodge so return to the venue in a damp, muddy state must be very common. We enjoyed all our evening meals down the road at The Kings Head each evening and enjoyed the 10% discount for Lodge users.
