From Our Editors

East Lambrook Manor Gardens is the iconic and quintessentially English cottage garden created by the celebrated 20th-century plantswoman and gardening writer Margery Fish. It was here that she developed her own style of gardening, combining old-fashioned and contemporary plants in a relaxed and informal manner to create a garden of immense beauty and charm. The English Heritage Grade 1 listed garden is characterized by many winding paths through abundant borders and is renowned as the premier example of the English cottage garden style. It has noted collections of snowdrops, hellebores and hardy geraniums and there is an excellent specialist hardy plant nursery in the garden. Also they have cafe and art exhibitions in the Malthouse Gallery

With hindsight I'd guess that the best time to visit would be late May early June

This is natural cottage garden but with the unusual hidden here and there, the wiggly stone paths lead to a few small lawns and what was stone stream with large structural plants in situ. You better take cash for the nursery, there are well looked after specimens of the plants seen throughout the garden, all at very reasonable prices. Definitely a place to go back throughout the different seasons, don't forget to take a camera.! Added bonus is you can take small dogs on leads. The tea room is very welcome after a wander around the grounds. It would be nice to have a few more benches in the more visual areas so you can sit to take it all in. The Gardens is One of my favourite places. Ps. The Rose and Crown is fabulous for meals, a corner area for those with dogs, but better to book.
