Bubble tea sounds like something the Mad Hatter might serve at one of his tea parties, but the beverage is steadily spreading from its origins in Taiwan to attain global popularity. Made with tea leaves and tapioca pearls and available in hot and cold varieties, flavours range from caramel milk tea to mango green tea (usually £3). Toppings can include regular black tapioca pearls or still more outré options like aloe vera or coffee jelly (50p each).
The first BoBoQ Tea Shop opened in Berlin in February 2010. Now there are 108 shops across Europe, and the first UK store opened in 2012. The company aims to bring Taiwan's highly inventive tea culture to the rest of the world, reflecting the remarkable variety of these concoctions in its menus' extensive selection of base flavours, hot or cold options, milk and milk-free variants and quirky additional toppings.
