Starting with how to correctly thread a sewing machine, clients will be tutored in the basic principles of dressmaking, with focus on making a bag by the end of the session. Those who have their own sewing machine can bring it along to learn how to use it, or machines will be provided, along with the chosen fabrics and threads for the session. Perfecting the stitch and straight-line sewing comes next, then it steps up a gear with tuition in finishing edges, turning hems and top-stitching. Classes are typically of between seven and nine participants and last three hours. The schedule of workshops can be viewed here.
A short walk from Hove station, Sew in Brighton offer tuition in all things textiles, from complete beginners to those wanting to design their own patterns. Workshops run all year round, with different class types such as quilting and roman blind-making or dressmaking. Crafty groups can participate in sewing parties, and there is also the sewing club, an online mailing list with sewing tips, local news and competitions.
