Groupon’s Guide To European Christmas Markets
Indulging in a seasonal escape, visitors will get the opportunity to visit the capital cities of Budapest or Prague and embrace the winter tradition in form of the annual Christmas markets. Travellers will get lost amid specific stalls filled with handcraft souvenirs, perfumed candles and handmade gifts, all wrapped in a warm atmosphere.
Enveloped in Yuletide spirit and winter cheer, each of these Christmas markets boast trinkets, rich mulled wine and parades. Sightseers may stroll along the enticing stalls in Budapest at Vörösmarty Square, where specific desserts including pastries, strudels and roasted meats may be savoured, while live entertainment is complemented by the specific lightings that adorn the whole area. In Prague, the wintery traditions are compressed at the Old Town Square and at Wenceslas Square, where a multitude of Christmas tree decorations, traditional souvenirs, local beverages and sweets may be enjoyed in a cheery atmosphere with carols and bright lights.
Tourists may savour baked goods in the 600-year-old Frankfurt market while spending delighting moments listening to live music and trumpet fanfare in the pleasant market of Römerberg. Living up to the German holiday tradition, Cologne attracts almost two million travellers every winter. By far the most imposing market of the city is the Cologne Cathedral Market, where the biggest fir tree in whole Rhineland unites its lights with the falling snowflakes, filling the air with millions of star particles. In Berlin, the capital city of all Christmas Markets, the festival is hosted at the Charlottenburg Palace and its park, where acrobats, gospel ensembles, lighting decorations and specific fare including roasted almond and baked apples create a festive setting.
Stalls full of wood carvings, figurines and thematic candles may be found in Piazza Navona, lighting up the Christmas atmosphere in Rome. Pancakes, donuts and other sweet treats are available in Milan at Piazza of the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, where the Italians celebrate with lighting decorations and live performances.
In Paris, tourists have an array of places to choose from when picking their Christmas Market destination, ranging from the famous Champs-Élysées to the local La Défense market alluring with an outdoor ice-skating rink. Bruges, famous for its Belgian chocolate, boasts not only medieval attractions adorned with colourful lights, but also a large market where sweet delights, hearty meals and hot drinks may be enjoyed.
