Groupon Asks Ole Ruch, General Manager for Europe, about Homejoy's beginnings and its UK launch.
G: How did the business come about?
"While working together on a start-up idea, brother and sister Aaron and Adora Cheung soon realized their apartment was becoming a mess. Adora looked for a way to find an affordable cleaner she could trust, but found there was no good way to do so. So they decided to build such a platform themselves, and they had the bare bones of a website within a weekend. They quickly found that both clients and cleaning professionals benefitted from the Homejoy platform, and it took off from there. Today, Homejoy has grown to more than 30 cities in the US and Canada, and is now launching in London as its first European city."
G: What's the ethos of your business?
"We believe that everyone deserves a happy home. For our customers, the first step is giving them a clean home, freeing up more time to spend on things they are passionate about, whether that's work, leisure time or friends and family. For our cleaning professionals, we provide them with a convenient way of managing their own business. Homejoy gives them a steady flow of work while also allowing flexibility for where and when they can work, thus enabling them to better support their own homes."
G: What's the most satisfying thing to clean and why?
"It's always most satisfying when you start with a really messy room and can straighten it out from top to bottom. The kitchen tends to be the most frequently used room and gets the dirtiest, so there's lots of scope for cleaning: dishes, sideboards, walls, hob, microwave, oven, fridge, floor... That said, even in the bedroom, there's lots of small things you can do that make a big difference when you come home – make a bed well with cushions nicely arranged, for example."
