Cost pub in perfect setting alongside Byland Abbey. We used our Groupon voucher without any problems and received an Afternoon Tea with so much lovely food that we couldn’t eat it all. They kindly boxed up the remaining food for us. They were welcoming and helpful. We shall definitely return
Great setting- nice rooms, we live not far away so were curious as to what it offered. basically if this had NOT been half price for 2 then we would have considered it a massive rip of and complained! This IS food on the cheap - not local FRESH - boxed or shop bought products to heat up is more the style. Pie was a slice from a budget big pie about ok but everything was not cooked to order at all. We had merengue pie for desert - again a slice of dry , thick crust base, you can buy anywhere ! not
made on the premises . Worst food anywhere locally I have been to - a REAL shame given the location and the Hype! Go to the Lion Inn or , well any other pub in Ryedale to see what is possible ..
What a beautiful setting and super friendly and obliging staff. We called in for lunch at the pub and had a lovely browse around the Abbey and local villages. We then returned later for our Groupon meal. The food deal is excellent value and both the manageress and the young man serving behind the bar demonstrated impeccable customer service. We felt very welcome and had a lovely day.
Overall it wasn't a very enjoyable experience, first of all price of meal was down graded not £25, but £21 each
First our starter came with burnt toast, garlic mushrooms in a soupy sauce had never had a taste of garlic , we ordered steak and chicken as mains , wanted steak medium came well done with horrible hard over cooked chips and an attempt at salad , chicken was OK but same horrible chips , the sweets were OK didn't taste homemade
Not the gourmet food I was expecting just very basic pub grub
Disappointed, mislead entirely! on this poor! deal. Supposedly £50.00 & @ half price @ £25.00. We viewed & printed off the £25.00 which read quite good ie main course Lamb shank etc. When we arrived we were given a £21.00! menu & advised that the owner varies the menu which is fair enough but he should not vary the advertised value of the meal which was definitely downmarket of the advertised one!.One new main course consisted of gammon steak with one egg, chips & a very simple salad. No choice of mushroom
onion rings,or anything else with it whatsoever.
The thin gammon itself was 8 oz max.& not particularly very tasty. Have had a lot better everywhere else!.Another main course was beefburgers which were thin, cheap quality, tasteless & leathery in texture, served with a very simple salad, small serving of bacon & cheese. The starters were average & finally the deserts decent (the highlight of an otherwise rather boring & disappointing course. apart from the, to be fair, decent cooking of the lackluster ingredients & the decent service from the only member of staff present, who was doing entirely everything!, friendly greeting on showing us four to our table, taking, preparing & serving drink orders. The same with the food orders in addition to all the cooking & clearing of the table, washing up & then taking payment.Clearly a very hard working young man. Who we feel was badly let down in all the other areas, as detailed. It was a very disappointing birthday 'celebration' for our friend dear Elizabeth, who had been looking forward so much to what had been expected this meal. We certainly wont be visiting this place again.Would certainly not recommend it to anyone.
Nice place, welcoming staff, I didn’t book as the voucher said it was not necessary, however staff seemed to think it should have been booked. Afternoon tea was average, one of the sandwiches was made from the crust of bread. Had to ask for jam and cream for the scones. However it was a lovely day, the setting made up for the lack of quality.
