It’s a nice little museum, doesn’t take too long to get round but lots of activities for little kids. They give you a quiz which for our family helped to make us read everything. Kids mainly loved the shop - but it’s great to support them and lovely pencils and books on offer.
Prize for the quiz was really appreciated by the kids (and adults!)
We learned so much because it was presented in such an interesting way. Not just the pencils but the WW2 secret, the pencil sharpener collection and where all the componenets come from. There was an exhibition of pencil art that was quite beyond was achievable. Excellent value, especially for a family.

About The Derwent Pencil Museum
Keswick, the alleged birthplace of the first pencil is now home to a museum dedicated to the pencil industry. Patrons enter the Derwent Pencil Museum through a replica of a graphite mine, a central source of materials for the industry over three centuries ago. Visitors can then follow a journey of the simple writing instrument, from the discovery of graphite to modern day production. A selection of activities awaits including discovering secret World War II pencils with hidden maps. The museum also runs a series of artist in residence workshops, with people like Beverley Haines, Valerie Woods and Karen Coulson demonstrating their talent to the students.
