The wildlife and history of South Wales walking tour

Walk South Wales

Select Option

An easy 4.5 mile walk for wildlife and history lovers. Start the day on the Crumlin Arms section of the beautiful Monmouthshire and Brecon canal where you will have sweeping views over the Ebbw valley. Look out for Kingfishers and Herons as you learn about the history of the valley and how the Industrial revolution shaped the area. You will then drive to the port city of Newport where you will stop and relax with some snacks beside the iconic Newport Transporter Bridge. Built in 1906 the impressive structure is one of the only bridges of its type left in the world and was an instrumental crossing point of the river Usk during the 20th century. From there you will head to the Gwent Levels, a unique landscape of fields, drainage ditches and sea shore, classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Your guide will take you to Goldcliff Lagoons, a collection of man-made lagoons lying next to the Bristol Channel. This special place is home to a vast array of birdlife.
