Founded in Oxford in 1879 by Benjamin Henry Blackwell, Blackwell’s retains its original Broad Street headquarters in the city of learning, as well as another 47 branches nationwide, and an accounts and library supply service. In 1915, Blackwell’s published J.R.R Tolkien’s first poem, ‘Goblin’s Feet’, and their Norrington Room boasts over three miles of shelving and was in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest single room selling books.
In 1995, the bookshop became the first in the UK to allow customers to buy online. Continuing their ahead-of-the-curve attitude to new technology, on 29 October 2012, Blackwell’s partnered with Foyles, John Lewis, Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Argos to launch the Barnes and Noble nook e-reader, with a 6-inch E-paper display.
