This day of golfing action sees groups of players take on 18 moorland holes (usually £25 per person on weekdays and £27.50 per person on weekends). Designed by Donald Steel, the verdant course stretches across 262 sloping acres peppered with obstacles such as a stream, ponds, woodland and doglegs. Efforts are fuelled by a bacon sandwich (£4.95) and a hot cup of tea or coffee (£3.50). Visitors can opt to pre-book a buggy to help navigate terrain for £20.

The Merchant

A historic country house overlooking orchard-strewn countryside and the Peak District beyond, the four-star Shrigley Hall Hotel boasts 148 bedrooms.
