Above and beyond service and expectations This hotel is one of the friendliest hotels we have ever visited. We were so impressed with the welcome from the reception staff. The hotel has a grand entrance area and driveway, plenty of parking although you must use the app to pay for parking. This is a reasonable charge. Our room was compact, but beautifully decorated and furnished. Facilities in the room included an iron. The shower room is spacious and inviting . Room temperature was perfect. There was no noise transference from the main road. There was brilliant lighting, and we particularly liked the underbed light. We visited the spa area, which was a nice surprise. Incredibly clean sauna, steam and pool area. Special mention to CLAIRE - she made my birthday feel very special indeed with a cake and fruit plate once she became aware it was my birthday. We didn't visit the gym on this occasion but we hope to another time. Overall, this hotel is fabulous, and our buffet breakfast the next day was also great - good choice of items and choice of breads, fruit, cereals, wonderful. Would not hesitate to return in the future. Thank you for making our stay extra special - very much appreciated

Groupon's Guide To Essex

Essex offers a rich tapestry of history, countryside charm, and family-friendly attractions. Historic landmarks such as the 7th-century Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall in Bradwell-on-Sea, Hedingham Castle in Braintree District, and the Norman-style Colchester Castle reflect the county’s heritage and cultural appeal.

But Essex isn't just for history buffs — it's also a fantastic destination for families. A key highlight is Colchester Zoo, one of the finest in Europe, home to over 180 species and offering immersive experiences including feeding giraffes, walk-through enclosures, and interactive educational displays. It’s a must-visit for wildlife lovers of all ages.

Charming rural villages like Finchingfield — often called the most beautiful village in England — and Great Bentley, known for having the second largest village green in the country, provide a peaceful escape from urban life. Meanwhile, coastal getaways in Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton-on-Sea, and Mersea Island deliver classic seaside fun, perfect for families in search of sand and sea.

Nature lovers will appreciate the serenity of Abberton Reservoir’s wetlands and the ancient canopy of Epping Forest, while shoppers and entertainment seekers can head to the sprawling Lakeside Shopping Centre in West Thurrock — one of the largest retail hubs in Europe.

Whether you're looking for historic intrigue, animal encounters, or a relaxing family break, Essex ticks all the boxes.

Large rat on the way into the hotel When we were pulling into this hotel this evening the first thing that we saw on the grass on the way in was a massive rat, that immediately put us both off, but due to having a meeting tomorrow morning we have to stay. Just horrible to see. Will not be staying again.

Did we enter the twilight zone of hotels? I booked this hotel through booking.com to celebrate my wife's birthday as well as Valentine's Day. As we pulled up to the hotel we thought the façade of the building looked very nice and inviting and even the car park entrance. The reception lobby also looked very nice and the lady on reception was very nice and friendly. I thought that I had reserved breakfast within my booking during our stay, however, I was mistaken so had to add this on as extra for our two night stay for the four of us as £18 each per day amounting to an additional £144 on top of what I had initially paid. On top of this there was a parking fee applicable, however, the nice lady on reception validated the parking for us. Upon getting to our room we noticed that the room had two twin beds and immediately thought to ourselves how is this going to work with the 4 of us as they were small beds. We also noticed a lot of sound and draft coming from the window in the room. I went back to reception to ask if there were any other rooms with bigger beds to sleep us comfortably and also mentioned the window problem. I was informed that all the rooms in the hotel had been sold out and unfortunately all the windows were in the same condition so it wouldn't matter where we were placed. We managed to make it work even though it was a little uncomfortable for me being a bigger guy with my head more or less propped against the wooden side desk next to the bed. The room was nicely decorated with a large TV and all the usual amenities. The bathroom is gorgeous with modern tiling, shower, mirror, toilet etc. Apart from our uncomfortable sleeping, we really enjoyed the room. Breakfast was a little bit of a let down. On a plaque as you enter the reception it states breakfast was until 11am, however, you're then told that the plaque is wrong and it is until 10am. We arrived at breakfast around 9:20am and found that most of the food was gone and we had to wait a while until it had been replenish. The coffee making machine was not working properly and all the milk had been used, so I had to ask if there was anymore, which they then replenished after a few minutes later. When we eventually got our breakfast we found that it was nice. A couple of the restaurant staff members were friendly, where a couple of others not so much, but think that they may have been a little overwhelmed. Speaking of which, some of the staff could do with a little training in manners as I said good morning to one of the cleaners and was completely blanked and looked at as if I was an alien to the point my family looked at me as if to say where the hell are we with this rude behaviour. We had afternoon tea and have to say that this was the best part of our stay as the staff was especially friendly and very helpful and made us feel welcomed. The food that was served was also very delicious and filled the spot. We used the gym in the afternoon which was small but had mostly cardio equipment like treadmills, rower, elliptical and bikes. There were some free weights and a couple of machines. One room had a lat pull down machine but I decided not to enter there as it did smell a bit nasty even though no one was even in there. We didn't use the spa area but you pass the swimming pool before you enter the gym and it looked nice and it was empty as we passed it. We were informed that you had to take your own towels if you were using the pool. On the subject of towels, we had to request more towels as there was only 2 initially for the 4 of us in our bathroom. We also had to request 2 more pillows. All in all we made the most of our time at the hotel. Would we stay here again - no, however, we thought the room was nice and modern with exception of the windows. Some of the staff were nice and friendly, whilst other members may benefit the hotel and themselves with some training in hospitality and being polite at least. Afternoon tea was brilliant along with the service.

Fantastic value dinner b and b package Fantastic value for money for a local night away Hotel is totally transformed from the Marks Tey Hotel. Have told several friends what fantastic value for money, and one cuoue booked immediately. Lovely friendly staff, reservation made by Emma, very personable, helpful and nothing too much trouble. Arranged a dinner bed and breakfast package for us, amazing value. Room was clean, comfortable, looked brand new. Use of the pool a bonus. Dinner and breakfast to our room, both of which were fantastic, and more than ample. 12 o clock check out very welcome along with breakfast to our room at a very acceptable 11am. Keep up the great work and will be back soon Thank you

Relaxed afternoon tea Me and my husband came here today for an afternoon tea, the service was exceptional and Michael is definitely a credit to your team, he was welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We received a sparkling groupon voucher for Christmas, I am heavily pregnant and was unable to have any alcohol and because the extra was paid Michael did not want us to miss out and went out of his way to make us 2 glasses of non alcoholic wine. Thank you very much, we will be back
