Above and beyond service and expectations This hotel is one of the friendliest hotels we have ever visited. We were so impressed with the welcome from the reception staff. The hotel has a grand entrance area and driveway, plenty of parking although you must use the app to pay for parking. This is a reasonable charge. Our room was compact, but beautifully decorated and furnished. Facilities in the room included an iron. The shower room is spacious and inviting . Room temperature was perfect. There was no noise transference from the main road. There was brilliant lighting, and we particularly liked the underbed light. We visited the spa area, which was a nice surprise. Incredibly clean sauna, steam and pool area. Special mention to CLAIRE - she made my birthday feel very special indeed with a cake and fruit plate once she became aware it was my birthday. We didn't visit the gym on this occasion but we hope to another time. Overall, this hotel is fabulous, and our buffet breakfast the next day was also great - good choice of items and choice of breads, fruit, cereals, wonderful. Would not hesitate to return in the future. Thank you for making our stay extra special - very much appreciated

Groupon's Guide To Essex

Essex offers a rich tapestry of history, countryside charm, and family-friendly attractions. Historic landmarks such as the 7th-century Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall in Bradwell-on-Sea, Hedingham Castle in Braintree District, and the Norman-style Colchester Castle reflect the county’s heritage and cultural appeal.

But Essex isn't just for history buffs — it's also a fantastic destination for families. A key highlight is Colchester Zoo, one of the finest in Europe, home to over 180 species and offering immersive experiences including feeding giraffes, walk-through enclosures, and interactive educational displays. It’s a must-visit for wildlife lovers of all ages.

Charming rural villages like Finchingfield — often called the most beautiful village in England — and Great Bentley, known for having the second largest village green in the country, provide a peaceful escape from urban life. Meanwhile, coastal getaways in Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton-on-Sea, and Mersea Island deliver classic seaside fun, perfect for families in search of sand and sea.

Nature lovers will appreciate the serenity of Abberton Reservoir’s wetlands and the ancient canopy of Epping Forest, while shoppers and entertainment seekers can head to the sprawling Lakeside Shopping Centre in West Thurrock — one of the largest retail hubs in Europe.

Whether you're looking for historic intrigue, animal encounters, or a relaxing family break, Essex ticks all the boxes.

Fantastic value dinner b and b package Fantastic value for money for a local night away Hotel is totally transformed from the Marks Tey Hotel. Have told several friends what fantastic value for money, and one cuoue booked immediately. Lovely friendly staff, reservation made by Emma, very personable, helpful and nothing too much trouble. Arranged a dinner bed and breakfast package for us, amazing value. Room was clean, comfortable, looked brand new. Use of the pool a bonus. Dinner and breakfast to our room, both of which were fantastic, and more than ample. 12 o clock check out very welcome along with breakfast to our room at a very acceptable 11am. Keep up the great work and will be back soon Thank you

Relaxed afternoon tea Me and my husband came here today for an afternoon tea, the service was exceptional and Michael is definitely a credit to your team, he was welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We received a sparkling groupon voucher for Christmas, I am heavily pregnant and was unable to have any alcohol and because the extra was paid Michael did not want us to miss out and went out of his way to make us 2 glasses of non alcoholic wine. Thank you very much, we will be back

Afternoon tea First visit to the hotel since it’s been upgraded and wow what a difference. Read reviews saying you have to pay for car park but we were about to pay on the machine out the front of hotel when the receptionist came out and told us that if we were visiting the restaurant we did not need to pay and just had to enter car registration on the machine inside. We greeted very warmly by the lovely Claire who served us. We had bought a Groupon voucher for the afternoon tea and we were very impressed with what we got for the price we paid. Sandwiches were lovely and scones very fresh. The only thing was they had run out of the Tiptree strawberry jam and only had apricot which we didn’t really want so Claire bought us over some of the strawberry jam they use for breakfast which was fine. Cakes were very nice but no meringue in the Eton mess which was a bit strange. Lime meringue pie was lovely. Overall we were very impressed and would definitely return

Police in the middle of the night and strong smell of cannabis. Unfortunately, our stay was very disrupted and we did not get a good night’s sleep. When we went to bed at around 11:30pm, there was a very strong smell of cannabis in the corridor, which was seeping into our room. This was unpleasant and concerning in itself. At approximately 3:30am, we were abruptly woken by police hammering loudly on the door of the room opposite us and shouting for the occupants to open the door. It was so loud that it initially felt like they were knocking on our door. The police escorted someone away for assault, but then remained further down the corridor for around half an hour while the guest continued shouting loudly. After this, there appeared to be other people moving around the corridor, and we could hear voices, radios or phones for sometime afterwards. We were unable to get back to sleep properly after 3:30am. When we checked out, the receptionist did not ask how our stay had been, but I raised these issues anyway. We understand that incidents like this can happen and may be outside a hotel’s direct control. However, we would have expected at least an apology for the disruption. There was none, only a comment that it was out of their control. There also seemed to be little concern about guests smoking drugs in the hotel and the impact this has on others. Overall, the lack of acknowledgement or apology was disappointing and left us feeling that guest experience is not important to the staff. We checked out a lot earlier than expected to come home for some sleep.
