Lovely stay Went to see Jamie Lawson and the Phoenix and had the BEST time! You can literally fall out of Exeter Central station and land in the hotel, and the Phoenix is 3 minutes away at a slow walk. The hotel is stunning. More like a castle than a hotel and the room was absolutely spotless. The staff are kind and professional, really friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Nothing is too much for them. It's warm and welcoming and doesn't feel like a hotel (if that makes sense). Breakfast is expensive but I might be splitting hairs. They fluffed my order up and I got the wrong thing £17.50 for fried egg and toast is ridiculous. (Order was English breakfast with no bacon). Parking is chargeable but we didn't take a car, and at £259 for 3 nights you don't really complain.

Excellent as always! We have stayed here a few times and always enjoy it so much that we have decided it’s our ‘go to’ hotel when we come to Exeter. Lovely staff, great rooms, perfect location and good prices … what more could you want. We will be back again soon!!

Shopping trip Ideal across the road from the train station. Close to shops and theatre. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very nice. Would definitely stay again.

2 night city break Have stayed here before when it was Mercure. Staff are very welcoming and friendly and it is very dog friendly. Twin room was spacious, clean and quiet. Only down side is the limited parking, which is expensive if you're lucky enough to find a spot. Understandable I suppose in the city centre. Didn't have the breakfast but there is a dog friendly cafe directly opposite the entrance. Very handy location for the shops...definitely stay again

Avoid at all costs This was the bus company's choice of hotel for my Christmas getaway. Having stayed in a Mercure brand before I was expecting a fabulous hotel. However , it is now not Mercure but the rougemont Sunday. My room on the 3rd floor was freezing cold, no drawers for clothes , moth eaten carpets & disgusting hairs in the shower . I went to reception to complain as there was no literature or numbers to use by the phone. Two guys with a portable heater turned up & a guy with a spray gun & cloth. Then Danielle the housekeeper arrived & I asked for another room with a bath. I packed all my things up & went to 224. Great improvement, although there are a lot of things that need addressing.Threadbare carpet on the main staircase leading up to rooms. No bin liners or toilet brush, bare minimum on the tea tray, no biscuits, no where but a shelf at the side of the ironing board in the wardrobe for clothes & only a small chair by the tv. Filthy curtains, & the bed had hard felt circles on the mattress which dug in you, & it was filthy with hairs & fluff. Moth eaten bare patches on the carpet , where , on my last morning, shock horror, I found a live carpet moth. I didn't sleep a wink most nights for pigeons cooing at 4.30 am & rock hard pillows.& Lift noise. The breakfast could have had a nice fruit salad bowl but that consisted of some sliced pineapple & watermelon on a plate & I had to ask for grapes. Horrid bland yoghurt in a bowl , no individual fruit ones ,& some miserable prunes . Also a plate of ham & cheese & salami. There were nice pastries though & a cooked option self service, but I prefer fruits . Christmas meals were very nice , we had to pre order by the 16 th Dec which was bizarre! Christmas day was lovely, although the carpet leading into the dining room was held together with three long strips of shabby duct tape! Crackers were the cheapest available,& there was no thought for non drinkers, some shloer would have been perfect but I got elderflower & soda like I was offered at the welcome reception on the first day. The staff also were great, especially Jake, nothing was too much trouble. So on arrival home all my belongings are out in the car & the clothes I wore yesterday are in my freezer! Having spent a few thousand pounds redecorating my home, & new wool carpets in the summer. This has been really stressful, & unacceptable, having paid over £1000 for this trip, & since the hotel is in new ownership, it needs closing down, fumigating & a total re fit.
