Groupon's Guide To Edinburgh

Located in Lothian, on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, the capital city of Scotland allures with historic sites, cultural landmarks and a wide variety of shopping centres and traditional markets.

History enthusiasts may visit the famous Edinburgh Castle, a 12th-century historic fortress built on Castle Rock, a volcanic plug in the middle of the city. Also, culture seekers may visit the Old Town and the New Town, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, boasting Georgian-style buildings and traditional markets. After exploring renowned museums and galleries, holidaymakers may savour traditional dishes such as haggis and Scottish shortbread, available at numerous restaurants and bars. Artistic types may head to one of the city’s music and theatre venues which keep guests entertained with folk acts, jazz concerts and plays. Edinburgh has a moderate climate with summer temperatures of about 20°C. Winter brings windy and frosty days with little sunshine. The transition seasons, spring and autumn, tend to be rather cool.

Lack Lustre I stayed in the Leonardo, Edinburgh Haymarket for 3 nights, in room 271, which is at the end of the corridor on the second floor. This is the best thing about the my stay, as I had limited noise from neighbours and people passing my room. Getting a drink in the bar on arrival, after a long drive, I asked the bar tender about the different types of rum available and he didn't know, or understand the question, In the restaurant, it's unclear whether you seat yourself or wait to be seated. After standing around waiting to be acknowledged, my colleague and I took a seat; there was no menu on the table. The food options are limited and were odd in presentation; I had katsu curry which was supposed to come wiht an Asian slaw, instead I had carrot chunks in the curry sauce and no slaw. The room was comfortable with good temperature control. But the quilt a bit too light for the time of year. There were basic tea and coffee making facilities in the room, as well as a coffee machine with two pods. For those travelling with children, there was no hot chocolate or biscuits, and no drinking water in the fridge. The bin bag in the bedroom bin was split, but replacements available under it for the cleaners ease, I imagine. I changed the bin bag, but noticed there was an oily garlic smelling residue in the bin - not pleasant! The breakfast buffet was disappointing. The serving tureens fail to keep the food hot, so it's already cooling by the time you sit down - get your toast first! Being in Scotland, I had expected black pudding, but there was none. Again for those with children, the sausage is slices of sausage meat, not sausages as you would expect. The fruit salad is mainly melon. The whole-fruit basket contained apples, pears and oranges, but no bananas! Oatmeal was available on request as were scrambled and poached eggs. Biggest choice of food options were carbs ( pastries, muffins, rolls, bagels, bread etc.) I didn't see any pancakes. Returning from work on day 1, I stopped by reception to request a blanket as I had found the quilt a bit light. I was offered a second quilt as they didn't have blankets, and this was delivered within moments of me getting back to my room. My room had not received any housekeeping, but I wondered if this was part of the hotel's commitment to sustainability (having read about about bedding changes every 3-nights, unless requested sooner). However, I needed more coffee and had to trek back to reception to ask for some. They didn't make any comment when I said there had been no housekeeping, so I assumed that was normal. My room did smell of wet towels, and now some fruit waste I had put in the bin from my first night. Day 2 returning from work, exhausted, my room had still not had housekeeping, and I was once more without coffee; and there was an even worse smell of wet towels, so bad I had to open the window. I returned to reception and asked about the lack of housekeeping. It had not been intentional, room service had missed me - despite there being a heavy presence of room service staff in the corridors at most times. I was advised I could wait in the bar while my room was cleaned. I got myself a drink (£14.70) and made some calls. This time the bar tender allowed me to look at what I was ordering and knew the difference between the two similar drinks I was interested in. After 30 minutes no one had told me I could go back, I returned to reception. I explained the situation to another member of staff who was about to offer me a drinks voucher while I waited, when the first person I spoke to advised my room was ready. The voucher was swiftly return to the drawer. I returned to the room and discovered it in a much better state, but coffee had not been replenished and waste from the previous drinks was still on the tray. I ran myself a hot bath, after which I decided to order room service as I was so tired. The phone in the room was dead! I had to use my mobile phone to call the hotel, go through the service options and wait. I was cut off 5 times waiting for the call to be answered, but in my PJs I was not prepared to walk back downstairs. After nearly 45 minutes the phone was finally answered and I placed an order. Chicken Caesar salad and ice cream were delivered after about 20 minutes - both of which were delicious. This is my first experience of a Leonardo hotel, and when I have spoken to people about it, they are really surprised at some of the issues, not to mention the food. In summary, not impressed, a lack lustre stay. I will ask to stay somewhere else when I have to visit Edinburgh again.

Disappointing stay in an older room Very disappointing stay. Front desk staff was lovely but I got a ground floor room which was in a bad shape. Very old bathroom, two single beds stuck together which made for an unconfortable sleep. The safe was not fixed to the wardrobe so it could just be taken away (not exactly safe) and the view outside was of the parking lot with cars parked right in front of the window (if I could open the window I could touch the cars) Amenities were poor and my kettle did not function properly (after 20 min water was lukewarm) As said before bathroom hasn’t been renovated and looks like it’s from 1995… Some colleagues had rooms on upper floors and they were renovated with coffee machines, modern bathrooms and a king bed (despite booking the same rate) Breakfast was adequate and once again I can’t fault the staff, they were all lovely, and location is great. But the rooms are very unequal in quality and I think it’s unfair to paying customers.

Hotel with convenient location The location of this hotel was good. We walked there from the train station and we were able to walk to the main tourist attractions such as the Royal Mile. We found that the entrance area was kind of dark and uninviting. More street lighting would be helpful. The room was clean and comfortable.
