Disappointing Stay Not a 4-Star Hotel and Definitely Not a Spa Experience We booked this spa break via Virgin Experience Days for my birthday. It was advertised as a 4-star hotel with spa facilities. Based on previous spa experiences, we expected relaxing ambience, multiple experience rooms, a pool/jacuzzi and attention to detail. Unfortunately, this stay fell far below those expectations. We arrived early after a 3-hour drive and were told we couldn’t check in, which is understandable. However, we were also informed there was nowhere nearby to get food as the hotel is on an “industrial estate.” We ended up paying £7 for a very basic sandwich in the bar — two slices of loaf bread with minimal filling, a few crisps and bland coleslaw. The Biscoff biscuit served with our coffee was six months out of date (September ’25), soft and clearly stale. This immediately set the tone. The hotel itself is extremely tired and poorly maintained. Duct tape was covering rips in the bar seating. Our room was dusty with cobwebs, door handles weren’t properly attached, lights didn’t work, and the bathroom was filthy. While the room was spacious, cleanliness and upkeep were well below what anyone would expect from a 4-star property. The included 25-minute back massages were good, although I was bruised the following day. The treatments were one of the only positives of the stay. The “spa facilities” were hugely disappointing. After being shown to the changing rooms, we were given access to just two areas: a relaxation room with beds and a sauna area with sauna, steam room and cold room. Photos online show a pool and jacuzzi, yet these were not mentioned when we were shown around. When we looked through other doors, we found small areas filled with builders’ equipment and rubble. The remaining space consisted of a few hard loungers and rattan chairs. That was the entirety of the spa. There was also a coffee machine with no coffee in it. The corridors had heavily marked carpets and a musty smell throughout — no relaxing spa atmosphere whatsoever. Dinner was equally disappointing. We queued for 15 minutes just to be seated. As spa guests, we were given a restricted set menu with very basic options. It would have been far more reasonable to allow access to the main menu with the option to pay any difference. Only two young staff members were serving the entire restaurant, resulting in long waits between courses. The issue was clearly understaffing, not the fault of those working. Breakfast was not included and was offered at £30 for two (£35 if not pre-booked). After the dinner experience, we chose not to pay extra. Overall, this stay was poor value, poorly maintained and misleadingly marketed as a 4-star spa experience. It was nowhere near the standard advertised and was a significant disappointment for what was meant to be a birthday celebration.

It was average There was mould on the bathroom ceiling. The shower had hairs on the wall, I'm guessing from the previous guest. And the towels we got had a holes in them. Other than that, it was ok for a one-night stay.

Let down by simple things A nice quiet location and within walking distance of shops and takeaways, Rooms are spacious with a nice big bed, unfortunately let down by the lack of cleaning and maintenance We got a good deal for the weekend but feel the lack of empathy and help from manager was a let down Room 222 Hairs all over the bath on check in Previous guests hair bobble Dust all over top surfaces and other areas Windows never opened Door handles come off in hand

We had an amazing weekend! I was arranging a birthday weekend away for my partner and I and I chose this hotel as it was quite close to St.Helens rugby club (where we were going) and also because it had an indoor pool and the price seemed very good value! After booking I read a few negative reviews and was concerned that it would be a disappointment for my other half....I needn't of worried! The hotel is nicely placed near some main roads and no its not noisy at all when inside your room. We had a lovely suite, it was huge compared to other places we've stayed. There was a kettle and a coffee machine and you only had to ask if you wanted more supplies. The bed was comfy and seemed bigger than a kingsize. All the staff were lovely and very helpful and friendly (apart from a couple that could maybe smile a little more). Theres a petite, blonde who wears glasses (didn't get her name) in the restaurant and she is a superstar, so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The pool was lovely and warm and we went there three times on our stay. The hotel was generally clean and tidy and certainly not as bad as some reviews have made out. The food was lovely, we had one dinner and breakfast both days. The breakfast is self-serve which I liked and plenty of cold and hot choices. On the second morning David took the time to come over to us and explain that they had been extremely busy that morning and had a chat with us about our stay, we thought this was a lovely touch and really appreciated it. We wouldn't hesitate to come back and I'm actually eyeing up a spa package for my birthday! For the price I paid I thought it was fantastic value and I loved the fact that, for a small fee, you could pay for a later checkout (subject to availability of course) which gave us a bit of extra time to enjoy breakfast, have a swim and pack up in a leisurely manner. We will definitely return!
