The Hotel

Set in the charming town of Ruthin, the four-star Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is located close to Valle Crucis Abbey and the Llangollen Canal Trail in North Wales. Rich in heritage, the castle was first constructed for King Edward I and was later restored and transformed into a hotel in the early 1960s. Among its distinguished visitors is HRH Prince Charles.

The property retains many of its historic features, including the original underground dungeons and surrounding moat. Its décor and room designs are inspired by the spirit of a traditional Welsh castle, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in its unique and historic setting. Many rooms provide picturesque views over the gardens, castle grounds, rolling countryside, or nearby woodland.

Guests can unwind in the hotel’s tranquil spa, which includes a sauna, steam room, and gym, as well as a range of indulgent treatments such as massages, body therapies, and facials.

For dining, the famous Medieval Feasts restaurant delivers a memorable experience with themed entertainment and authentic medieval-style cuisine. Alternatively, guests can enjoy refined dining at Bertie’s Restaurant or relax with a drink in the elegant, oak-panelled Library Bar.

Okay, but not great Let me start by saying that we’d booked this stay at a discounted rate at over 50% off. Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is a large and imposing building in a beautiful location. We arrived early evening after a late lunch at another establishment with family, and were staying for just one night. Our room was a long way from the reception area so was quite a trek with the luggage. The room itself was adequate and comfortable, we had some problems with the heating, but these were quickly solved when the receptionist told me how to operate the system. I asked about room service only to be told that “we don’t do room service”. I asked about buying some snacks and was told that they only do sandwiches etc during the day, but not at night so I ended up driving into town to pick up some snack items. The spa was fully booked so we were unable to use that, but we did notice that it was outside of the hotel building which meant that you would have to go outside in your robes in order to use the facilities. Breakfast was included in the package so we went into breakfast at around 09.30. We asked about dairy alternative products such as milk and yogurt etc and were told that they did have soya milk, but not dairy free yoghurt. There was no sign of any gluten free options in terms of bread so we decided not to mention it because it would have meant “making a fuss”. There was no fruit on offer, apparently they had run out? There were plenty of cooked breakfast items on offer and toast if you weren’t gluten intolerant. The hotel in general was looking very tired and in need of some money spending on it and it didn’t really match the quality of some other hotels that we have stayed at. This hotel was just okay and wasn’t very inspiring and make you feel like re-visiting, I would have been upset if I’d paid full price.

Spa treat for Family On arrival everything looked great. Until advised where to go for the Spa. Lots of stairs and very dark. Had to wait as no one there greeted by a young man in a suit, very pleasant but surely it should have been a Spa personal. He directed us where to get changed etc Robes one towel locker key. Changing room had one tiny bench no where to put your clothes and later everything got wet!!!!_ as there was three of us joined by another 3 other guests. Showers were filthy. When we went out the young man showed us round the place Sauna, another wet Sauna and the mud ritual room for 2 but they put 3 to which one of us had to stand alternating for 50 minutes. I am not going to tell you about the jacuzzi. Or the nail I found. But the place needs to be cleaned a deep clean!!! I did say something didn’t want to know. Oh the quiet room is a room with dumped old sun beds covered in blankets and towels a few scattered cushions, the only room that was warm. Sorry for the poor review but you do need to upgrade and clean up. The service was fine but if you are going to have a man put him in a spa uniform not a suit be more professional.

Disappointing stay Very disappointed visit here. My husband booked it for my birthday surprise. It wasn't what we expected, very dated needs some money spending on it. We moved rooms as first room was falling apart. The next room wasn't much better but it was the best we were getting!! I know its a old castle and the surroundings are lovely. But it needs updating. It is very cold too. He requested to put something in the room for my birthday and they never got back to him or done it!! The evening meal was nice bit over price for what you got. The breakfast was awful and not stocked we walked away in the end without any as we already waited 20mins for food ro come out and never did!! Overall disappointing stay. Wouldn't stay again unless it improved massively.

A Warm Welcome and Happy Days at The Castle We have just got back from a three night stay at the Castle and it was wonderful. It's located in the most beautiful grounds with trees dating back hundreds of years. The location is quiet, peaceful and home to Peacocks and all manner of wildlife. The Italian gardens are just like the ones I've visited abroad and the Peacock Terrace is just the place for a peaceful coffee and a chill out. . Our room was spotless, as usual, and the few requests we made, had all been done. Perfect! It's a fair price for what is included. We had breakfast in the Dragon Tavern. It was tasty with a lot of choice. All the staff are fantastic but a heads up goes to Diane. I am very disabled and and she went out of her way to help me. The Tavern serves great food from noon till 9 and the Tavern Bar is well stocked. It's even dog friendly and we always meet some lovely dogs. The Castle is steeped in history and has an Olde Worlde charm It's so different to the usual hotels on offer. It reminds me of the Palazzo Marziale in Sorrento. That's a converted Palace with a great history.. Ruthin Town is full of quirky shops. It has a Craft Centre, Victorian Goal. If you make it to Denbigh, just beyond is a 1950's Museum where you could spend all day. It's massive and brings back a lot of warm memories. Mold has a good shopping centre. There's a lot more I could say but don't want to bore anyone. We've stayed in some fabulous 5 star hotels in Athens and Rome. They had some great facilities but we got very odd looks with me being on a mobility scooter.. lol. I can whizz round in the Castle and everyone lets on. It does have good disabled access and accessible rooms...I am impressed. If you are looking for a warm reception in very pleasant surroundings, Ruthin Castle is the place for you. We will be booking again in May or June. Jan and Fred Robinson
