The Hotel

Set in the charming town of Ruthin, the four-star Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is located close to Valle Crucis Abbey and the Llangollen Canal Trail in North Wales. Rich in heritage, the castle was first constructed for King Edward I and was later restored and transformed into a hotel in the early 1960s. Among its distinguished visitors is HRH Prince Charles.

The property retains many of its historic features, including the original underground dungeons and surrounding moat. Its décor and room designs are inspired by the spirit of a traditional Welsh castle, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in its unique and historic setting. Many rooms provide picturesque views over the gardens, castle grounds, rolling countryside, or nearby woodland.

Guests can unwind in the hotel’s tranquil spa, which includes a sauna, steam room, and gym, as well as a range of indulgent treatments such as massages, body therapies, and facials.

For dining, the famous Medieval Feasts restaurant delivers a memorable experience with themed entertainment and authentic medieval-style cuisine. Alternatively, guests can enjoy refined dining at Bertie’s Restaurant or relax with a drink in the elegant, oak-panelled Library Bar.

Afternoon tea Greeted at reception and sent down a dark and dingey corridor. Arrived at ‘the tavern’ down the bottom which is also a dark, cold and miserable area. The young lad by the till ignored us initially, he was glued on his laptop. The table we sat on had a candle that had been finished a while. No music, no atmosphere. Waited about 15 mins for the afternoon tea to arrive. The lad that served us didn’t even give us plates - we had to ask for plates!! Tea came in a teapot with no extra hot water. The cups were like mugs you get in Wetherspoons. Only 3 slithers of sandwiches each- not enough at all. No butter for the scones or bara brith or whatever it was, it was so dry. My Mum’s Birthday afternoon tea at the castle was a complete waste of time - could have done one better myself. As a local Ruthin person trying to support a local business, it was completely disappointing. Sort it out Ruthin castle!!

A really average experience The room was excellent with appropriate en suite facilities. It was warm during winter and there was a tea and coffee facility available. The lunch was adequate, even filling. It had GF options. In the evening the GF options were very limited and some which were listed were not available. Gluten Free options at breakfast time were very poor. There was no GF cereal, no GF hash browns, no GF sausages. Fire instructions in the room were in English, French and German but not in Welsh. Provision of inclusivity could a QR Code with BSL signing for deaf people.

Amazing experience! 10/10 We stayed at the castle for my mums 60th birthday and could not have been more impressed. Firstly the staff were amazing! Every time we passed a staff member they smiled and asked were you okay which seemed genuine and not forced. The spa staff were so lovely, and you never felt like they were trying to pressure you or upsell you like we have in other places previously. Whatever the staff are paid it is not enough. The atmosphere both inside and outside the castle are amazing and we instantly felt relaxed on arrival. Seeing the peacocks roaming around was lovely. The food was a slight miss although I feel like that was more my fault as I don't typically eat steak and ordered it while I was there and didn't really enjoy it, as it was tough and dry (I did also order it well done so again this could have been on me) - my mum however had a steak and Guinness pie and said it was gorgeous. The room we stayed in was amazing and very clean - the bed was extremely comfortable. The room was slightly cold but considering its size and there being 3 radiators in there I'm not sure this is something that could be fixed without it compromising the historical integrity of this castle and the rooms. We did take dressing gowns with us and fleece blankets and found we were comfortable. When we initially booked in we read some reviews on Google and TripAdvisor and were worried that it would be awful but after staying I do think some of the negative reviews are unfair. It is a working castle - and there are slight imperfections (scuff marks and chipped paint and the likes) but nothing that had a negative impact on our stay at all. I would honestly encourage anyone thinking of going to try it - if we don't we will lose places like Ruthin castle and their history forever.
