Located just an hour's drive from the centre of London, The George Hotel can be easily reached by car or train. The hotel is famous for its medieval cellars, probably dating from 1450, preserved behind glass. Although the structure of the building has changed over the centuries, visitors will still have a chance to see some remains from Tudor times.

All of the rooms are equipped with en suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs with Freeview channels, hospitality tray, hairdryer and iron.

The property offers an on-site brasserie restaurant serving top-quality English dishes, as well as regional specialities. There is also a bar with fireplaces and beamed walls.

Groupon's Guide To Essex

A host of Grade I- and II-listed buildings offer the base for heritage tourism in Essex, including landmarks like the 7th-century Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall in Bradwell-on-Sea, the Hedingham Castle in Braintree District and the Norman-style Colchester Castle. On top of the approximately 1400 landmarks of historic interest, Essex also boasts a number of unique highlights.

The county is thus home to Finchingfield, the quintessential British village, deemed one of the most beautiful rural hubs of England, and to Great Bentley in the Tendring district, boasting the second largest village green nationwide. Countryside sceneries are complemented by coastal expanses and seascapes, with destinations such as Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton-on-Sea and Mersea Island catering for visitors interested in beach tourism and water sports.

Nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts can head for the wetlands of Abberton Reservoir or for the ancient woodland of Epping Forest. Further pursuits are occasioned by Saffron Walden, a one-of-a-kind blend of rural charm and medieval features, and by the modern-day Lakeside Shopping Centre in West Thurrock, a gargantuan 2600000 square feet shopping centre and one of the largest in Europe.

Tried to put me in a different hotel I booked a one night stay at the George Hotel as a lone, female traveller. I paid £12 to park at the rear of the hotel and then it’s a short walk to the front of the hotel which is on the High Street. Imagine my surprise, and slight horror, when I was told I was in a different building. I assumed the receptionist was referring to an outbuilding. However, it was apparently another ‘sister’ hotel located a few streets away. I had paid for breakfast and was told that I would have to come back to this hotel to dine in the morning . At the point of booking, there was no indication whatsoever that I might end up in a totally different premises, otherwise I wouldn’t have booked it. Having booked thousands of hotels over the years I’ve never booked a hotel and then been told I’m being placed in a totally different building a few streets away. I told the receptionist that I wasn’t happy at all and she, reluctantly (but politely), found me a room in the George. I found it quite amusing that she said I should doublecheck next time to which I replied, how do you check something that you don’t know? How is that even feasible? I note that a traveller made the same comment back in August 25 but the reply from the hotel merely acknowledge their disappointment, as opposed to explaining why someone would be put in a different hotel. Therefore, I’m very interested to know how anyone thinks this is acceptable.

Brilliant New Years Eve This was the first year we celebrated at The George Hotel in Colchester, And we are so pleased we did, We met with Remi the operations manager and she is a Star, all the staff have in fact been fantastic. We were a very big party (21) , but the table looked so festive, plenty of room for everyone to sit. The food choices were plenty for people to chose, Music and DJ and Sax player really set the tone of the evening, great atmosphere right up to to 12 midnight hour, we even got Prosecco and party poppers for the big hour. All the staff joined us on the dance floor and they were enjoying the moment like we were, Remi made sure everything was running smooth. All my party said what a great night, So if anyone wants to know what to do for 2026 New Year just book up at the The George Hotel in Colchester
