Groupon's Guide To Conwy County

Crossed by its namesake river and adjoining the Snowdonia National Park with one-third of its territory, Conwy County Borough boasts unique attractions to keep globetrotters busy while visiting Northern Wales. One of the most notable destinations in the area is the town of Llandudno: dubbed the Queen of the Welsh Resorts, it is the largest Welsh beach destination, beckoning guests with sights such as the Great Orme and the Little Orme, and the award-winning Llandudno pier.

Flourishing heritage tourism is based around monuments such as the late-13th-century Conwy Castle and the Elizabethan-style Plas Mawr, dating back to the 16th century. Sites of the Aber Falls in Abergwyngregyn and the Bodnant Garden in Tal-y-Cafn are also well worth a visit, whereas golf aficionados can spend leisurely break on the Great Orme Family Golf course or on the numerous other courses since the county leaves nothing to be desired in this respect.

A lovely stay at the Kinmel. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The treatments were also fabulous and we enjoyed the spa, but the pool was a bit too cold for me!

The Kinmel: Comfort, Character & Cracking Seabass My stay at the The Kinmel & Kinspa Hotel was one of those rare hotel experiences where you arrive expecting a pleasant overnight stop and instead find yourself quietly wondering if you should cancel the rest of your plans and simply live there. Tucked just off Junction 24 of the North Wales Expressway, the hotel sits at the end of a secluded little lane that manages the impressive trick of being both wonderfully convenient and delightfully hidden away. It feels like you’ve discovered a secret—one that only appears if you know exactly where to look. Check-in was an absolute masterclass in efficiency: warm, friendly, and quicker than it takes most hotel lifts to arrive. Within moments I was making the short stroll to Room 112, which can only be described as a small sanctuary disguised as a hotel room. First impressions? Plug sockets everywhere—glorious, plentiful plug sockets exactly where you need them. In the modern world, this alone deserves applause. Add to that a comfortable sofa perfectly positioned for relaxing in front of a large TV, and a bed so generously sized it could comfortably accommodate a small family reunion (though I selfishly kept it all to myself). The bed itself was superbly comfortable, and the pillows were the sort that make you briefly consider smuggling them home in your suitcase. The bathroom continued the theme of indulgence: a large shower, an equally impressive bath, and luxurious toiletries that encouraged a moment of self-care that felt far more spa-like than your typical hotel wash-and-dash. Dinner in the restaurant was another highlight. I opted for the seabass, which was well worth the modest 45-minute wait while the kitchen wrestled heroically with its new menu. The result was excellent—fresh, well presented, and entirely worth the patience. When we first arrived, the bar had the vibrant buzz of a place enjoying itself properly—full of life and conversation. Yet later in the evening it transformed into a calm, relaxed lounge where I happily settled in to watch both football and rugby on the two large TVs. It struck a lovely balance between lively social hub and peaceful retreat. One particularly memorable moment of the evening was enjoying a drink with Tom, one of the owners. In an age where “hospitality” can sometimes feel like a corporate buzzword, Tom demonstrated exactly what it should mean. Warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in his guests, he took the time to chat with us and ensure we were enjoying our stay. It’s that kind of personal touch that turns a good hotel into a memorable one. Sadly, breakfast remained a mystery to me. Service begins at 07:30 and by that point I was already back on the road. However, judging by the high standards set by dinner, I can only assume breakfast would have been equally impressive. I also didn’t manage to sample the pool or spa facilities—an oversight I fully intend to correct someday. From what I could see, they looked superb and very much part of the hotel's charm. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Comfortable, welcoming, and with just the right blend of luxury and character, the Kinmel & Kinspa Hotel is the sort of place that makes you hope you’ll find yourself passing Junction 24 again very soon… purely by coincidence, of course.

Looks the Part but service is lacking We recently stayed at this hotel and unfortunately our experience turned from a good first impression into a very concerning one. On arrival, the hotel looked clean and our initial impressions were positive. However. Things quickly went downhill afterwards. Around 1.5 hours after drinking a pint of draft larger in the hotel, I became severely unwell. I spent the entire night in the bathroom vomiting and suffering with severe diarrhoea, which was an extremely unpleasant experience. My wife attempted to contact the night porter a few times for water and assistance but no one answered the phone, leaving us without any support during the night while I was very ill. In the morning around 7:30am my wife had to search for staff members, their response was dismissive and lacked any concern. She made it clear that whatever I had eaten or drank at the hotel had caused me to be seriously ill throughout the night, yes this did not appear to be taken seriously. We later sought medical advice and based on the timing of symptoms and events, I was diagnosed with food poisoning consistent with drinking contaminated draft larger. To add to the experience, the bed was extremely uncomfortable although I barely used it due to spending the entire night in the bathroom being unwell. Once we managed to arrive home 72 hours later my wife contacted Ted the hotel directly about what happened, she has received one response, but all further correspondence has since been ignored. Which is very disappointing given the seriousness of the situation. Overall, while the hotel appeared clean on arrival, our experience was extremely concerning due to the illness, the lack of overnight support, the dismissive attitude from staff, and the failure to properly address the complaint afterwards. Due to the serverity of the illness and circumstances surrounding it, the matter has now been reported to the relevant authorities for investigation. I hope the hotel reviews its hygiene procedures and customer care practices to ensure no other guests have to experience what we went through and the after effects of it. Now taking medication for 2 weeks and off work through their incompetence We will not be staying or stepping foot inside again.
