On Friday 11th March 2011, an earthquake measuring up to 9.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Japan. The epicentre of the quake was about 81 miles from the coast of Japan’s main island and triggered a tsunami warning for 20 countries in the Pacific. The full effects of the natural disaster’s force has not yet been fully revealed but early reports describe the wide-spread and real damage to infrastructure, nature and man. We already know that up to 4 million people are living without electricity and up to 1 million without water. The chance of more aftershocks to the 100 or so that have already happened (all of those above 4.5 magnitude) is very real. Relief efforts have begun and the need for short-term and long-term disaster relief is pressing.
The Red Cross are a humanitarian organisation led by a team of volunteers who seek to prepare and respond for emergencies in a number of ways. Response teams around the world endeavour to relieve human suffering through short-term and long-term programmes to make sure that when the crisis abates the framework for change is there. This 150 year old organisation is instrumental in the relief efforts that are still going on in Haiti after the January 2010 quake that displaced 1.3 million and killed more than 200,000 people. The Japanese Red Cross has already begun its efforts and its international siblings have started disaster relief funds, a Family Links website and a disaster message board.
Join in the Red Cross’s efforts in expanding their disaster relief fund for the people of Japan in conjunction with Groupon by donating £2. Every pound helps and because of this any donation will be matched in full (up to the collated total value of £70,000) by Groupon. This means that if the public generously donate £70,000, Groupon will match it in full and add another £70,000 to the fund taking the total to £140,000.
