If starting at Pickering, catch the earliest possible in order to spend time in villages en route or Whitby. Check timetable or ask brilliant staff/volunteers because not all trains are through, and not all are steam. Pickering station cafe is excellent. Great day out!

Great trip we both enjoyed the day

The railway is set in beautiful countryside, be sure to look at the timetable for the day you intend to visit so that you can be hauled by your choice of steam or diesel, not all services go all the way to Whitby or come back from Whitby, currently. There are also special services that run during the day like the Pullman services hauled by guest locomotives, Flying Scotsman, Tornado, etc., these are not included in your day rover. The lady in the ticket booth was very rude when her computer system wasn't reading the GroupOn voucher correctly, she kept implying it was my fault and when she finally processed my order, she then ushered me away when I tried to show her the dates my vouchers were purchased and couldn't have the same code which she said they were. Whitby and Pickering are best visited outside of a visit to the railway, the timetable doesn't allow much time for sight-seeing. Goathland, home of the TV series, Heartbeat is one of the stations on NYMR and is worth a visit too.
