Nike’s commitment to sustainability
When you buy from brands, as a responsible consumer, you want to know what commitments they’ve made to sustainability. Whether that’s moving towards renewable sources of energy in production or advocating for the protection and respect of workers worldwide, Nike has taken some impressive steps.
Nike Brand footwear suppliers have reduced their energy use by 55% – meaning today it takes less than half the energy to make a pair of shoes than it did ten years ago. In 2017, some recycled materials were used in 75% of Nike footwear and apparel.
Nike is setting the standards. Compared to a traditional running shoe, the Nike Free Run Flyknit generates 60% less waste. And there’s some ambitious targets for 2020 too:
- 100% renewable energy in all Nike-owned or operated facilities by 2025
- Zero footwear waste to landfill
- 20% reduction in freshwater use in dyeing and finishing
- Zero hazardous chemical discharge
- 10% reduction in our products' environmental footprint
In the words of a Nike Designer, Noah, “if we can change how we make shoes, maybe we can change the way we make everything.”
There is no finish line for the brand’s efforts, which are also focused on harnessing the power of sport as a unifying force in communities. To help kids reach their potential and create equal playing fields, they’ve given more than $12 million in community grants.
