Gifts for Movie Lovers

By Editors | 28 Nov 19 | OUR GUIDE TO THINGS TO DO

There’s nothing quite like going to the movies, taking a little escape from the outside world, having a bag of popcorn bigger than you can hold with both hands and soaking in all the action of the big screen. If any of your loved ones love going to the movies or binging film after film on the sofa, there’s a good chance these movie-related gifts will put a smile on their face.

Getting a movie buff the right gift needn’t be as hard as trying to get hold of the Death Star plans. We have had a look at some of the latest box office smashes and Hollywood classics to give you some movie gift inspiration that is Oscar worthy.

Beauty and the Beast

Disney fans around the world rejoiced when the live action remake of Beauty & the Beast was released. Just like the original, it became a box office smash and gave a whole new generation the chance to experience one of Disney’s best stories. Whether you prefer the new version, or swear that the original is superior, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t enjoy one of Disney’s true classics.

You can treat the enchanted prince or princess in your life (and no, we’re not calling them a beast) with a gift more precious than an enchanted rose by whisking yourselves off to Disneyland Paris for a magical weekend away.

You’d be surprised how easy and cheap it can be to spend a few days at the park, and it’s more than worth it if you and your beau are Disney fanatics. As well as shops full of all the Disney toys, trinkets and treats you could imagine, it has some classic theme park rides including:

  • Big Thunder Mountain
  • Phantom Manor
  • Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril

As well as smaller attractions like It’s A Small World and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups too – ideal if you have any little ones (or scaredy big kids) in tow!

Back to the Future

“The power of love is a curious thing.”

Some of the most iconic opening lyrics sung by Huey Lewis & The News at the beginning to one of the greatest films of all time. While it might not be possible to get someone who loves the film a fully functional time-travelling DeLorean, you can always look to Marty McFly’s wardrobe for inspiration.

Inspired by the film, Nike recently created 89 pairs of self-lacing Nike Mag shoes just like those worn in the film’s sequel. They were sold at auctions around the world for the Michael J Fox foundation, with a few pairs selling for over $100,000 each. A flux capacitor wouldn’t even cost that much money.

Our top gift picks for those who really want a Back to the Future themed wardrobe would be:

  • A pair of high top sneakers
  • A red gilet
  • A pair of Doc Brown’s “2015” style sunglasses
  • A Gray's Sports Almanac Phone Case
  • A back to the future t-shit

We’ve also seen replica hover boards for sale online, but we can’t confirm if they’ll help you defy gravity just yet.

La La Land

Making a musical in this day and age isn’t an easy feat – so making one as good as La La Land is incredibly impressive. When we weren’t busy swooning over Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s romance around the Hollywood Hills, the song and dance extravaganza won five Oscars, including Best Score, Best Song and Best Cinematography. It has become one of the top grossing musicals of all time, trailing just behind Chicago, Grease and the aforementioned Beauty and the Beast.

You might be wondering how it could be possible to capture the idea of such a movie in the form of a gift, and we have two words for you: DANCE LESSONS!

What’s more romantic than partnering up and learning how to get your ballroom, salsa or jive on? Beginner classes are usually quite cheap, easy to find, and once you past the initial awkwardness of not knowing which way each foot goes, learning to dance with your partner can be incredibly exciting and a great bonding experience!

But, if you’re certain your lack of rhythm is irreversible, you could always settle for a framed print of Ryan Gosling or Emma Stone (whichever you prefer).

Wonder Woman

With D.C. Comics bringing Wonder Woman to the big screen, the long overlooked icon has enjoyed a renaissance recently. The smash hit blockbuster has brought the archetypal Amazonian woman to a whole new generation of fans.

Famed for her instantly recognisably striking costume, general badass-ery and iconic logo, there are loads of gift ideas for any Wonder Woman fan (just as long as they don’t expect an invisible jet).

If you go to the gym a lot, you’ll probably have noticed lots of people walking about in Superman and Captain America muscle shirts. Thanks to the film’s success, there’s plenty of Wonder Woman fitness gear out there to help anyone chasing those Amazonian gains get a few more reps in.

If you’re a tough love kind of friend, you could always have them prove how much they’re a modern Wonder Woman themselves by signing up for a Tough Mudder or Spartan race – why not join them and go after superhero status together?!

Guardian of the Galaxy

Like millions of other people, we were instantly got hooked by the words “I am Groot”.

In our opinion, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are some of the best Marvel films, and they’re personally our all-time favourite superhero films.

They also have some of the best movie-related gifts. You can actually get your own “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” cassette, loaded with the full soundtrack.

However, these days it can be hard to find a cassette player to play it on, which is why a lot of people are buying the soundtrack for Vols 1 & 2 on vinyl. (It was a very popular gift for Father’s Day this year.)

If you already have the soundtrack to stream on your phone, a dancing baby Groot Bluetooth speaker is the perfect portable dancing partner.

Think you have as good an aim as RoboCop does? Then prove it by booking an activity day!

As well as adrenaline-raising sessions like Zombie Survival Experiences, bungee jumping and sports car racing, challenges like:

  • Archery lessons
  • Paintballing for two (or more)
  • Clay shooting

They will certainly appeal to those with decent hand-eye coordination and a competitive streak. You won’t be able to hit the target every time (unless you’re RoboCop, of course), but practice makes perfect!

The Lego Batman Movie

It is hard to fault a movie like The Dark Knight, but still we think the Christopher Nolan blockbuster just doesn’t live up to the brilliance that is The Lego Batman Movie. Sit anyone down to watch that movie and dare them not to laugh. It is pretty much an impossible task.

If you like the creative nature of the movie, you can get some great little gift ideas. Provide the one you love with hours of fun (and a little frustration) by getting a 1000+ piece LEGO set! Nothing brings out the big kid in us all like trying to build a LEGO Batmobile from scratch. (Just mind you don’t step on stray pieces.)

Another very popular (and very cute) gift idea we like is putting a mini LEGO Batman figure inside a small picture frame and writing a quote from the movie in it. It makes for a great alternative to having a big movie poster on your wall, can be easily personalised, and nothing says you care like a handmade gift!

The Godfather

This list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t talk about the greatest film of all time. Other than a horse’s head in their bed, there are plenty of gift options for fans of The Godfather.

Why not make your loved one an offer they can’t refuse with a surprise trip to Italy for a few days? Stroll around the likes of Sicily (where the Corleone dynasty originates from), take in the scenery, but watch out for any signs of someone cutting up orange slices. Learn some Italian, enjoy the food and a little chill-out time, and have some laughs over bad impressions of Vito. Just be careful you don’t offend the locals.

As the credits roll on this gift guide, we hope you’ve found the ideal present for any movie fan in your life. Whether they’re a comic book fanatic, a musical buff or an action lover, a little imagination can help get a Hollywood style gift without the need for a Hollywood-esque bank heist. Roll out the red carpet for your imagination, and before you know it, you could have your own star on the gift giving walk of fame.
