From Our Editors

Georgian grandeur emanates from the 200-year-old walls of Willersley Castle Hotel. Perched on the edge of the Peak District, the Grade II listed edifice overlooks the River Derwent as it meanders through the property’s 60-acre grounds. The hotel has 30 bedrooms in the castle and 14 bedrooms in the mews block, and guests can dine in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. There is also a leisure club and various conference facilities on-site.

The building is lovely and the setting fabulous, but the decor is tired beyond belief. They are in the wrong league for afternoon tea. Thick white earthenware china in a dingy room with no outlook but concrete was just not on, even with Ava Maria playing to us. Thick cut bread sandwiches served with wet salad leaves, a hugh scone made some time in the past, stale beyond belief but uncooked in the middle. A slice of chocolate cake nice but collapsed on the cake stand. Oh dear. Perhaps high tea would be understood better by this worthy team. The promise of elegance and daintyness conjured up with afternoon tea completely passes them by. Bless them.

It needs refurbishment and old plastic flowers removing. Our dining experience would have been made much better by seating us in a lighter area (there seemed to be a front facing room with a view available) instead of in the corner of a dull back room with no one else present.

Afternoon tea and cream tea should be served on China not thick cheap pot. A room with a view would have been nice rather than being stuck in the back office sharing a courtyard with the ladies loo.

The service could be improved. We were served our tea then left on our own, no one came to ask if we were ok or if we needed anything else.
