Stop At: The Historic Dockyard Chatham, Main Gate Rd, Chatham ME4 4TZ England
Arrive at The Historic Dockyard Chatham and park in the free of charge visitor car park. Head towards the entrance to visit the discovery centre and collect your annual entrance ticket for unlimited visits throughout the year. Feel free to then explore this wonderful maritime destination at your own leisure.
Visit four new interactive galleries ‘Command of the Oceans’ to reveal the full dockyard story from the ‘Age of Sail’, a time when the people of the Dockyard built ships for the Royal Navy, helping Britain’s Command of the Oceans. Explore the extraordinary archaeology with the timbers of Namur (1756), a major 18th Century warship, then take a journey through the tools and trades of The Dockyard, and come face to face with Chatham’s maritime treasures.
Immerse yourself in the vivid Hearts of Oak audio visual gallery and discover how ships, including HMS Victory, were designed and built at Chatham Dockyard. From there visit the largest collection of historic lifeboats and then climb aboard three historic warships, a Victorian anti-slavery sailing ship, a Second World War Destroyer and a Cold War submarine.
Get hands-on in the remarkable Georgian ropery, where the rigging for HMS Victory was made. Saunter past the Commissioner’s House and officer’s quarters and explore galleries that unfurl the secrets of the story of Great Britain at sea. Marvel at an architectural delight up on the mezzanine floor of No 3 Covered Slip, and then see BIG items from The Historic Dockyard and the Royal Engineers Museum on display on the ground floor. Explore world class collections from Royal Museums Greenwich and Imperial War Museums in No 1 Smithery to unlock fascinating stories surrounding fantastic ship models and incredible objects.
Choose from two locations for refreshments and lunch options. The Wagon stop canteen offers a variety of hearty ‘doorstep’ sandwiches and hot Kentish pies. Or The Mess Deck restaurant for a great selection of tempting meals, snacks and hot and cold drinks.
Please note: The Victorian Ropery and Submarine are timed ticketed tours that are included within the entrance tickets and run throughout the day. Both tours are bookable at the ‘plan your day’ point. All of the other galleries and attractions can be visited at your own pace.
