Mothers Day Gifts - The Belfast Edition

Now that Valentine’s rush is over, the shops have turned over their efforts to Mother’s Day (March 15th in the UK- mark your calendar!). I love being organised for the holiday season and always try to get something a little bit different or personalised. Here are my top presents for your Mum, Grandma, Auntie or mamma figure in your life that also help you to support local business.

Tickets Please

Tickets Please is a recent discovery of mine. They specialise in selling original framed railway tickets of Northern Ireland from the 1960s-70s. All of the tickets are unused deemed overstock once the decimal changeover took place and cover a wide range of places in Northern Ireland. I thought this was a very sweet idea as many people have enjoyed summer jaunts to the Portrush or Bangor. It’s a lovely way to remind you of good memories and own a little bit of history! Owner James has now also expanded into square cushions (which look amazingly like high end designer) and wash bags.

Belfast Restaurant voucher

I think restaurant vouchers are always a great option as it allows the recipient to treat themselves for an evening. The new restaurant vouchers that can be purchased in the Visit Belfast Centre in denominations of £10 and can be used a wide array of restaurants across the city. My recommendations are Bistro Este in Ballyhackamore and Flame in the City Centre. See here for a full list of participating restaurants.

Makeup lesson at Makeup Pro Store

If you have a glam mum like me, a makeup lesson with Northern Ireland’s finest makeup artists in the comfort of their studio style store is a must have. Owned by legendary Northern Irish makeup artist Paddy McGurgan, they stock all the brands and brushes you would need for a flawless face. This is a great option for gifting if your mum wants to learn more about products that they should be using as their skin changes. They now have stores both in Belfast and Newry meaning the experience is more accessible than ever.

Top tip: Book early and book in with Paddy himself- it’s an experience your loved one will never forget.

Grainne Maher

Grainne Maher is a well-known and loved Northern Irish designer. Known largely for her millinery work, her Pluck and Devour jewellery line has been worn by the likes of Selena Gomez at the 2011 MTV EMA’s in Belfast. The stunning Perspex pieces are all lovingly hand-crafted by Grainne and brighten up any plain tee or shirt. They make a beautiful lasting gift. My personal favourite is the Pegasus- the magical horse comes in an array of colours and is sure to always receive lots of compliments. If you are feeling very generous, one of Grainne’s unique headpieces would make the perfect gift for an upcoming wedding or a day at the races.
