From Our Editors

A hilltop site gives unbridled night-time views of space at the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory. Among the natural surrounds of rugged Craigengillan, star-gazers can train their eyes on distant planets using a range of telescopes. The 14" Schmidt Cassegrain telescope lets astronomers peer first-hand into the unknown, while the robotic 20" Corrected Dall Kirkham telescope is housed in a 5-metre domed observatory. An elevated observation deck gives naked-eye views of the sky. In addition to sightseeing visits, the observatory also hosts lecture nights for schools, and sends out a mobile planetarium for private functions.

Only one toilet for 20+ people and it didn't flush - sorry not for me! No lighting as out in the middle of nowhere so very difficult to find especially in the dark. Very little signposts and when you came to a fork in the road with three options there was no indication which one to take.

Road to observatory very narrow, and difficult to travel up to,it is signposted going up,but going back down in the dark is very hazardous, and is not signposted to get back on to the main A713 which needs to be rectified.

Nice program to do with your family. If you don't want to follow the driven instructions to arrive there because the GPS doesn't work with postcode then try the longitude and latitude (cardinal points) on your GPS like we did, just look for it on google that will take you there in the same way.

Our visit was on a night when there was a lot of cloud coverage so we didn't see very much through the telescope. This didn't spoil the visit too much though as David was very informative and clearly knows his stuff. The presentation and information in the room was very good. WELL DONE!!!

There is no signage telling you where it is. Not very accessible in cars. I worried about the underneath of my car being damaged, and the condition of the road, if there had been heavy rain. It had been raining slightly the night I was there, and my car was filthy, imagine the mess if it had been heavy rain. I know the small print said, road passable with care, I think when phoning to book, people should be advised about the road condtion.

Too many people were allowed to attend our session. It was crowded and cramped for space giving each person very little time to look through the telescope. A warning that winter clothes would be required would have been helpful too.
