Market Street, Hatherleigh, Devon EX20 3JN Directions

From Our Editors

The thatch-roofed George Hotel sits a short drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park where activities include country walks, horse riding and, for thrill-seekers, kayaking and rock climbing. Okehampton, just a 12-minute drive away, also offers up its own countryside walks, where sights such as the high moors and Meldon Reservoir can be visited. The region's industrial past is also up for exploration, with the last working water-powered forge in England, Finch Foundry, keeping kids and history aficionados content. The hotel boasts 13 bedrooms, some of which feature charming features such as overhead wooden beams and fireplaces. Guests staying for 2 or 3 nights will be provided with a bottle of house red or white wine to enjoy over their visit. The hotel has taken on many lives in its five-hundred year history. Originally a rest house and sanctuary for Tavistock monks, it has also functioned as a brewery, law court and coaching inn
