From Our Editors
Housed within a Grade II listed building in the heart of Colchester's old town, Cafe 21 offers an array of freshly baked sweet and savoury waffles, alongside hearty breakfasts and lunches freshly cooked to order with gluten-free and dairy-free options available. They take pride in using only fresh organic eggs, as well as baking their scones on a daily basis. There is also a wide array of freshly ground coffee, as well as a well-stocked bar serving a choice of wine and beer.
We booked our table the day before redeeming our vouchers and were accommodated. Afternoon tea was good and the kids enjoyed different items on the table as did the adults. The café was clean and staff were pleasant. I was disappointed however that my Lattes were considered 'not a coffee' for the purposes of the inclusive price (as only tea and plain coffee also known as Americano were) and we had to pay extra for them. They met our need for dairy free options for sandwiches, however this did not extend to scones or other sweet options. We had an extra child we hadn't factored into the booking and the staff were gracious to allow us another table as it became available. However, I got the sense that some of the customers did not appreciate the children's chatter and were moved to another part of the café, and for this reason, I do not recommend it for families with young children.
Very please ant cafe staff very friendly and good food
The sandwiches were sparse and the bread was dry. The scones were lovely. We had to wait for over half an hour to be served, despite having booked, as the cafe was so busy. The staff were very apologetic and in the end, as our seating area was extremely noisy, they moved us to a quieter spot.
I made a phone booking as soon as I purchased the Groupon voucher and Cafe 21 were able to accommodate us the same day and at a time we required. The Groupon vouchers was for latte and waffle for 2 and the server told us what drinks options we could have if we didn't want the latte, we both decided to try the latte and it was nice. There we both savoury & sweet options available for the waffle choices and we opted for savoury as it was nearing lunch time. I had mushroom and cheese melt and my daughter had bacon, cheese & chutney. They we both delicious, very filling and arrived in a timely manner.
Cafe 21 was easy to find , well presented and has a lovely garden with seating to the rear. The staff were pleasant and not rushed.
I will go back there as the menu is very varied and good of good value.
Friendly staff, good food and lovely garden to sit in in the middle of town.
The waffles were raw in the middle and the latte was far too strong to be drunk. A waste of money.
Great little restaurant with a wonderful courtyard garden with outside tables... I will definitely be returning!
One of the best afternoon teas that my wife and I have experienced. Excellent fayre, especially the finger sandwiches plus good strong coffee. The service was friendly and prompt and surrounding pleasant, particularly the shady outdoor seating area. Would certainly recommend Cafe 21.
Delightful little cafe with a beautiful garden area. Pancakes were great, coffee could have been a little hotter but will definitely be returning.
