The four-star Slaley Hall is home to a spa, restaurants, country club and two golf courses. Spread out over 1,000 acres of Northumberland countryside, it features an Edwardian mansion suitable for weddings, family holidays and romantic breaks. The golfing facilities include the Priestman course, which is a test for golfers of all abilities and reveals panoramic views over the Tyne Valley. The Hunting course, a venue on the 2012 PGA Seniors Tour, boasts rolling fairways of rhododendrons, giant pine trees and manicured greens, and is designed to challenge the more experienced player.

Overcrowded, queue for showers, no loungers around the pool, changing rooms very busy, no robes left, had to wait an hour then got a dirty one. They crammed too many people into the place in one go. Made it stressful rather than relaxing!!

Not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. Having experienced several comparable hotel spas this was very disappointing. Had to queue at reception, not enough robes so had to stand and wait a considerable time, robes(when they came) were warm and damp - obviously straight out of laundry . Not enough lockers. Not enough seating and beds around the pool. Had to send back a filthy milk jug when tea was ordered at the juice bar.Lunch expensive. No facilities for spin drying swimming costumes. Not at all a relaxing day sadly.

The Spa area is very tired save for the relaxation room and treatment room I was in in comparison to competitors. Customer service at the cafe in the pool is non existent and dreadful - out of Peppermint tea and unwilling to go into hotel to get more, "where are you going to be drinking that" when I ordered soft drinks followed by "you cant take them down there or out of here -not my rules - it'll stain the carpet in there (relaxation room)" I dont think I have spilt a soft drink whilst sober in 20 years. Rules are rules, but the delivery and alternatives for us were not made available at point of delivery nor was it polite or pleasant. The toilets were dirty, my friends treatments were below par, a distinct lack of luxury which we felt was because we were on a groupon deal. no show around, little interest from FOH spa staff. A really disappointing experience. We would return for the golf and amazing food and service in the hotel but absolutely not to the Spa and had I paid full price, I would have had a refund by now.

The treatment I chose was a pedicure and, whilst it was nice, it wasn't up to the standard I expected. I sat on a dining chair for the first half of the treatment, which wasn't the most relaxing atmosphere, and my toes were separated with rolled up toilet roll. The spa and treatment areas looked tired and the changing rooms were not as clean as I would have liked. Although most staff were friendly, the man serving on the pool bar was rude and far from helpful. All in all, not bad for the voucher price but definitely not worth the full price. I've wanted to visit the spa as Slaley Hall for years and was a little disappointed - it could be so good with a few tweaks but seemed a little unloved.

For a 5 star hotel there were some finer details missing - no staff showed us around facilities, a very loud aqua class was on for over an hour when we were there and we were not advised of this. It limited used of the pool. Drinks were not allowed in the relaxation area. Generallyt, customer service was poor - noone asked us at the end of the day how our experience had been - noone offered or mentioned the £5 voucher for products we should have received. Toilet roll was used for my friends' pedicure - not very 5 star.

The spa and pool area was totally over booked. There was no where to sit, I mentioned this twice to spa staff. Eventually I spoke to some of the visitors and negotiated a space for myself and daughter. The sauna was broken, there was no where to get comfortably changed (we used the towel bin area by the showers. Items on the limited lunch menu were unavailable, when we did order it arrived incorrect. Do I need to continue???
