A Victorian spa town, Moffat is great for a little potter about and then crown it all with a sumptuous afternoon tea – perhaps with a glass of sparkling wine – in an atmospheric hotel. And boy is it atmospheric. Originally built for the Earl of Hopetoun in the 1750s, Moffat House was designed by Robert Adams, the star architect of his day. Along with sandstone pillars and a sweeping cantilevered staircase, it has the breathtaking Hopetoun Restaurant with gorgeous views across the grounds to a 260 year old oak tree. Moffat House Hotel is just off the High Street in Moffat. Voted The Best Kept Village in Scotland and a winner of the Scotland in Bloom award, Moffat is fun to explore. Further afield are attractions like the Great Mair’s Tail waterfall and Gretna Green.
