The afternoon tea at The Royal Hotel was the best I have had, the food was delicious and the table was set out lovely. The staff were really helpful and friendly they made us feel really welcome. Well worth the money, this was my second visit and I will be returning in the new year.

Staff were really rude. We booked for 5, arrived & said we had a booking for 5 (Groupon for 4 + 1 standard rate) then food came out for 6. We obviously couldn't eat the 6th and hadn't ordered it but they tried charging us for it saying we had booked for 6(!) & calling us liars & thieves. They argued with us for 30 mins & really spoilt the special occasion. Basically, it looked like someone had messed up & if we didn't pay for their mistake, they would have to. Finally sorted it with the manager's manager but went home shaken.
A really good afternoon tea, with friendly service & as much tea/coffee as we wanted.
Lovely food and staff very friendly and helpful
The room was so small and the wardrobe was in the way of walking around the bed.The outside noise from the taxi rank below our window did not stop all night with horns and people shouting constantly .The. Window was an old sash type ,with no sound reduction at all . This was a first floor room 181 on the side of the hotel closest to the taxi rank , do not get a room on this side! No sleep . The actual room quality and breakfast were good.
the number you have to call to book the room charges 55p a min i payed £30 for a £40 room due to 55p a min charge and they say its 13p big difference complained and have not had a satisfactory reply, as for the hotel i haven't been yet but last time it was a good hotel if somewhat dated

Be prepared for a hilariously amateurish style of service and very basic menu in the restaurant where the waiter points out choices that ‘make it easier’. With the general tatty appearance, especially lifts and carpets, we wouldn’t stay here again. Big shame because it’s a beautiful old building.
