Established initially as a small shop in Bradford in 1979, Mumtaz has since grown to consist of restaurants in Bradford and Leeds. The menus draw heavily from family recipes, with the emphasis on providing authentic Kashmiri dishes. The restaurants can also cater to corporate and outdoor events, as well as special occasions such as weddings.
Excellent food and brilliant serv
The food is great and the Groupon voucher offers amazing value (mine was even cheaper, as I had a 50% discount code, so I literally paid about 1/4 of what the full final bill would've been). The restaurant is nicely decorated (and so much different from what you'd normally expect from an Asian restaurant) and the staff are very polite and friendly. Also, the mango lassi is to die for! Only downside was that the pickle tray included in the voucher was actually smaller than the 'full' pickle tray they have on the menu, which is a shame, because everything on that tray is delicious, but the manager was kind enough to 'upgrade' us to the full pickle tray anyway. :) Lastly, even though I used to live in Clarence Dock, so literally next door to Mumtaz, I can see how this could be quite a bit out of the way for most people, whether they're coming from the city centre or from anywhere else outside Hunslet.
This used to be a superb restaurant, with wonderful dishes, well-trained and knowledgable staff and an enviable reputation. Indeed - we were regular customers over a number of years - and so this review is based on much experience.
However, in the last two years they have encountered problems with their landlords, and HMRC, following a court case reported in the Yorkshire Post in Feb 2018:
"Former directors of Bradford food firm Mumtaz disqualified over '£970k gold bullion purchase"
We booked a table for Monday 10th September, and arrived only to find the doors chained and padlocked with a scribbled not to say the "Restaurant was shut on Mondays".
We called in the following day and used our Groupon Voucher - the food was indifferent: - The pickle tray had shrunk from 8 delightful dishes (last year) to just three, the chicken liver starter had no sauce whatsoever, and the Lamb Karahi was dry and badly seasoned.
Leeds is not lacking in good restaurants - but unfortunately Mumtaz is no longer one of them.
The restaurant surroundings was lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The waiting staff were very helpful.
The restaurant was not clean at all. Floors and seats were filthy, as were most of the staff uniforms. The food was mediocre at best and seemed to be sized to match the deal. Not the flagship site it is marketed as!
Lamb shank is delayed full !!
As always fabulous food and great service!
This place lacks atmosphere. My girlfriends meal tasted burnt, like the sauce had caught. Toilets were not clean. One toilet blocked with paper and water over flowing. Pricey meals if wasn’t for Groupon. Had much better food and expetenxes at our local Indian.
Fabulous afternoon tea for 4...service was brilliant and even swapped some food we didnt like for ones we did...definately go back
