Situated on the outskirts of Newmarket, The National Stud is an equestrian centre with a history dating back to 1916, when the stud farm was donated to the British government. Originally, the farm supplied the British army with light cavalry horses for the war, but the programme was short lived. After numerous changes throughout the century, the centre is today privately owned, but is still deeply committed to the thoroughbred breeding industry. Public tours of the farm and lands are now available, and an on-site cafe allows visitors to sit down to some refreshments in a picturesque setting.
