From Our Editors

Buckfast Butterflies & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary is a family-run attraction that aims to be both enjoyable and informative. Children and adults alike can get acquainted with the animals and insects at the butterfly farm and otter sanctuary, with a keeper on-hand to pass on valuable information if required. Children will be able to find out about the life cycle of butterflies, and meet the terrapins, leaf cutting ants and fish. The otter sanctuary has three different species of otter: the native British otter, the playful Asian short-clawed otters and large North American river otters. Best times to enjoy the otters are the feeding times at 11.30am, 2.00pm and 4.00pm each day.

Wear layers you can take off in autmn/winter, it's hot in the butterrfly house and cold outside by the otters

we went on a day that had been below zero temperatures the night before and so there was not much activity from butterflies although we did see quite a few orange and stripey butterflies. Seeing the Koi carp and Iguana were good in themselves as they were both huge and I don't think I have ever seen such big fish. The otters are a real delight to see, they are the cutest animals although category 1 according to danger and the extremely knowledgable keeper. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the otter keeper as she spoke very clearly and knew all about Otters and there habits, where they come from etc. WE HAD A LOVELY MORNING! Thank you

Fantastic place - the butterflies are so beautiful. Make sure you go at feeding time for the otters as that's when they come out and the talk from Tim is very engaging. Don't worry about going in the winter either as you can warm up in the butterfly house afterwards.

Me and my partner went for the day and it was true my incredible. There were 3 feeding times for the otters, 11.30, 2 and I'm not quite sure the other, but Tim (who was amazing) walked us around and told us all a little about each otter as he fed them. I honestly couldn't recommend it more.
