Really superb food with a great selection of cake but would have been nice to have had labels on the jars of tea to avoid confusion! Individual tea infusers would have been great also. Really lovely guy that served us but felt the room was a bit 'tatty' and uncared for-clean tablecloths would have been nice and fresh (or even artifical!) flowers in the room would have created a nicer setting.

When I booked I added in comments no cheese please. I phoned in the morning of our visit to check this has been received and was told I would be called back but wasn't. Kitchen knew nothing about it. Chef apparently coild not make anything else for me so my friend and I were given humus sandwiches and ham and mustard .. No other choice. Was it so hard to make a round of salmon and cucumber? Scones were rock hard and we sent them back. We given two smaller ones which were fresher but obviously from some other plate as already spread with cream and jam. Felt we were second class citizens with a group in voucher as nothing was particularly pleasant about the visit. Good job we had a sense of humour. When I visited in August the service was excellent and quite a good afternoon tea. This time felt the hotel couldn't be bothered as was full of corporate meetings etc. Give up on it Wokefield as you don't do a great afternoon tea!

Having arrived on 22nd September, we were told there was no record of the booking. This happened to several other people whilst we were there as well. We were given a table and were shown the variety of teas. I asked which was ordinary tea. The waiter, showed me "the nearest" which was perfumed and bore no resemblance to ordinary English tea. including the wait for the table, it was nearly an hour before we got our sandwiches and scones. The sandwiches included a soggy mess, which I think may have been tomato and basil, awful! The others were not bad. After the sandwiches, we had to wait for our cakes. I had had enough of the tea by then and asked if there was any "ordinary English tea" the waiter brought me some tea bags, which were slightly better than the perfumed stuff. The waiter did his best in all of this, and none of this was his fault, but it was not really a pleasant experience and it had been a treat for my elderly mother, so very disappointing. One of the problems seems to be that the afternoon tea is served in the bar and the food is coming from elsewhere, there seems to be a lack of communication somehow.

Location in the bar was very noisy. Would have preferred to take the tea outside.
