From Our Editors

Welcoming guests on board a steam train, Spa Valley Railway strives to promote the historic railway linking Eridge and Tunbridge Wells. Visitors can admire the High Weald landscape from the comfort of a restored 1960s train. At Eridge, alight briefly to see the restored heritage station before returning back to Tunbridge Wells West. At Tunbridge Wells visitors can witness an exposition of historic locomotives and engines as well as an engine shed erected in 1886. Driving experiences and themed tours, including fish, chips and murder or pie, mash and a pint are also available to those who book in advanced. If during your visit you wish to break your journey then the Spa Valley Railway can sell you additional tickets for travel later on! The old-fashioned trains can also be hired for a range of private events and weddings.

I purchased a family ticket for my Grandson and his parents to experience steam train travel. They were freezing cold on the train plus a tree had blocked the line and they had to be held up whilst all train staff had to saw up the tree before removing it. Unfortunate but did not make for a pleasant experience.

The to adults as well as the two children in our party all thoroughly enjoyed the trip out of Tunbridge Wells, for the adults the nostalgia and for the children the excitement of being driven by a steam engine with its blowing whistle and noisy steam, they just loved it all and so did we.

Firstly I had no confirmation from groupon and when I logged in it said I still hadn't booked! I hadn't printed the tickets as they were etickets, but I had no access to these! It was New Year's Day so couldn't get any response from Groupon (our booking was for the next day) so I rang the railway direct and soon as I said a groupon booking immediately the spa valley worker became dismissive and abrupt! Telling me to contact Groupon! I managed to persuade him to actually speak to me as my booking was for the next day and Groupon would not be able to help! He did confirm our booking. When we arrived we queued at booking office to then be told Groupon customers needed to queue elsewhere! So despite arriving early when we got on the train it was extremely crowded with hardly any seats, we were told there were seats but we might have to sit separately! We later learnt it was kids for £1 day, had we known we would not have booked it was noisy and crowded and just not the relaxing day out we imagined. There was little information about the stops so we got off at groombridge where nothing was open and we were freezing cold! Not a good day out, would not recommend unless you are just taking your children for a cheap day. Plus made to feel as though we shouldn't be there and as though we were second class passengers because we used Groupon. Would also like to point out it was barely any cheaper we only used Groupon as I'd not heard of the Spa Valley and saw the deal when looking at local offers. So all in all not a good experience, this is only the second time I've booked a day out with Groupon and will be the last as the first was equally bad!! Spa Valley should realise Groupon is a great way of advertising so should treat people as equal to customers that book direct! Saying that I am deleting my Groupon account.
