The River Restaurant at The Lowry Hotel provides a place to eat and drink for locals and visitors alike. Its glass-walled, riverside setting overlooks Santiago Calatrava’s Trinity Bridge, while the interior boasts purple leather chairs, semi-circular banquettes and Fornasetti plates, as well as mirrors, lithographs and prints decorating the walls. The establishment also has an exclusive private dining room for up to 24 people, which is licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies. Customers can sample a number of dishes from the eatery's a la carte menu, which is designed using seasonal, local produce and features a range of steak and seafood options. Afternoon tea and an array of breakfasts are also available, along with a plethora of cocktails and other beverages.

Only served pots of tea, but only a cup of coffee, even though I asked for a pot. Food portions very poor for the price. Been to much better places for far less, like the Hilton or Malmaison for example.

I'm posting this review on behalf of my Mother In Law. I bought the afternoon tea voucher as a Christmas present for her and her daughter as I really wanted to treat them and make them feel special. Unfortunately, that is not the treatment they received. They were made to feel second class to other customers in the restaurant (especially when they were asked if they'd booked via Groupon or Virgin. Maybe Virgin charge more and therefore give the customers better treatment?). The service was slow. Upon arrival, the guy on the front desk didn't acknowledge them for over 5 mins, not even a quick look up to say 'Sorry, I'll just be a minute', nothing. The prosecco that was purchased as part of a deal was forgotten and then arrived 1.5 hours later after having to ask twice for it! My mother in law ordered tea and her daughter ordered coffee. You'd expect a caffetiere of coffee when tea come in a pot, but it was just a single cup of coffee and not once were either of them asked if they wanted a refresh during the 2 hours they were there. The staff were not friendly, no smiles and nobody went over to their table apart from when the food was first put out. Yet my mother in law notices that staff went to other tables and appeared to be having friendly chats. They felt very unwelcome. The 2 end sandwiches on the stand were apparently very dry (so probably been left out a while beforehand) and the cakes were not to a high standard which you'd expect from such a upmarket hotel. The only saving grace were the warm scones which they both enjoyed. Such a disappointing experience overall, and a big concern for me as I've booked another voucher for my mum's 70th Birthday and we'll be going soon. I'm already not looking forward to it as I wanted to make my mum feel special, not disappointed. Really wish I had booked somewhere else now.

This was bought as a gift but I received feedback from the recipient. The food was nice/average but the service was very slow. Recipient preferred the Hilton afternoon tea experience.
