From Our Editors

Coldharbour Mill is a wool-spinning mill opened in 1799. The old Mill, now museum, still has the original machinery and uses the original methods. Guests can enjoy a tour and can learn about the history of South West's textile industry. There is an on-site shop and picnic area.

The surroundings are very pleasant and relaxing, we took our own pack lunch ,and sat on the picnic tables by the by the steam under the trees , which was lovely , the staff made our visit very enjoyable.

You are free to walk around the place as you like. For the working wool machines you can either go at your own pace, or have the guided tour which takes about 45 minutes. The guided tour was good as the man who took it was very knowledgeable and not only explains the process but also answers questions - shame he is leaving soon after some 30 years.

This is an historically important venue worthy of a visit by either individuals/groups/families/schools. Steam up days are particularly interesting with knowledgeable volunteers. The Mill needs your support in order to stay open so please visit and help to keep history alive!

Being members of a local Photographic Club we purchased the Special Event tickets so we could visit the Mill with the Steam Boiler and Engines fired up. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable on both of the tours, which was included in the price. After the tours we were able to go back through the Mill again at our leisure which gave us ample time to take photographs and talk to the staff looking after each machine. With the Steam Engines running this is a lovely place to visit. There is a cafe, which I believe is run by a third party, and although basic the food is adequate and reasonably priced.

We've been to Coldharbour Mill several times, but this is the first time on a 'steaming day'. It really makes all the difference to have the sounds and smells as well as the sights of the machinery. Well worth paying extra to go on one of these special days. Only negative is that the Waterside Cafe is very basis so don't expect to get fancy food on your visit, although the setting is excellent.
