The story behind the creation of the Smashburger can be traced back to Ashland, Kentucky, in the Appalachian Mountains, over 50 years ago. Accounts had it that Bill Culvertson created the concept of Smashburger when one of his workers at Dairy Cheer hamburger stand discovered that he was smashing a slice of meat with No.10 bean. At the same time, grilling can bring a superbly delicious flavor to a burger.

In making the Smash burger, the burger meat is thrown into a sizzling hot pan or skillet and smashed as it cooks within the first few seconds instead of letting a huge, fat burger rest on the grill to cook. This process results in a burger that is crispy in texture and has a well-browned outside that is cooked quickly due to the combination of heat and pressure.
