A Grade I listed fortress dating back to Norman times, Caldicot Castle and Country Park is surrounded by 55 acres of beautiful countryside and the meandering Nedern brook. Families can watch Roman gladiators do battle during an ancient extravaganza, with free reign to explore the castle grounds and take in the craft talks and demonstrations.
Groupon Asks John Sterry about the stunning views, peaceful spots and chilling tales of Caldicot Castle and Country Park.
G: What is a "must-do" activity if visiting the castle for the first time?
"You must visit the top of the keep and take in the views across the country park and the River Severn. Those who dare can go down into the dungeon, while children can take part in treasure trails during the week, or perhaps archery or coin striking on weekends."
G: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the castle?
"Wherever you stand you are surrounded by history, and you can imagine the knights, soldiers, witch hunters, craftsmen and guards who may have stood there before. Even ghosts – the castle is said to be haunted, with many guests claiming to have witnessed the Grey Lady in our Woodstock tower."
G: What's your personal favourite part of the castle?
"I like to sit by the small pond and listen to the resident honey bees with a piping hot coffee or chilled lager in hand."
Caldicot Castle earned a favourable 4/5 stars from Qype users, and a superb 4.5/5 stars from TripAdvisor users. Reviewers admired the restored castle attractions, enthusiastic personnel and engaging audio tours. The scenic grounds and well-maintained playground met further acclaim.
