About Chillingham Castle
Chillingham Castle is famous among historians for having served as the base camp of King Edward I's attack on William Wallace in 1298. King Edward III granted permission for battlements to be added in 1344, and the park was designed centuries later in 1752. Today, it is the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield, in whose family the castle has been since 1246. The grounds of Chillingham Castle are inhabited by deer, red squirrels, rabbits and badgers, as well as numerous birds and plants. The peaceful lakes are populated primarily by brown trout, and the Italian Garden, designed in 1828, is also open to the public. Chillingham still retains its torture chamber and castle dungeon, whose walls have borne witness to untold horrors.
