Groupon’s Guide To Reykjavik
One of the safest and cleanest cities of modern times, Reykjavik is located on the south-western coast of Iceland and it is also the world’s northernmost capital city.
With more than 100 pubs and clubs, many of them found on Laugavegur Street, a wide choice of beers, Iceland’s drink of choice since 1989, are available for sampling. An iconic landmark of the city, the looming Hallgrimskirkja Church offers visitors panoramic views of the city. Standing 15 metres high and weighing 25 tons, the church’s pipe organ is one of its key features, while the statue of Leifur Eiriksson, the first European to discover America, guards the entrance. The capital’s name translates to ‘Smoky Bay’, after the columns of steam that rise from the hot springs, which can still be visited today.
Tour Details
The Northern Lights Mystery Tour (15 Sep 2016-15 Apr 2017)
Join us for a mysterious trip, on a dark winter night. Any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring we can witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which we call the Northern Lights. Far from the glow of the city lights, we hunt for the exclusive Aurora Borealis , known as the Northern Lights. Together we will search for these magnificent auroras. On a clear night, we may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the sky in dramatic shapes, colors, patterns and sizes. The Northern Lights are visible from September through April but can only be seen on a clear night. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel this tour if the evening sky is heavily clouded or weather conditions are not favorable. Please contact the front desk of your hotel on service day or the Tour Desk at hotel Saga, Loftleidir and Hilton to find out whether we will be operating the tour. Prior to the tour we will check the weather forecast around the south western part of Iceland. From experience, we then decide where each journey will lead us, for the best possibilities to see the Aurora Borealis.
- Included: transportation by coach and experienced guide
- Duration: 5 hours
Please note:
Your pick up time will be 30 minutes before the time shown on the voucher. The duration of the tour varies between 3-5 hours and depends on the weather conditions and whether we see the Northern Lights early. Please kindly note that the Icelandic weather can be severe. The tour can be suddenly cancelled. We cannot guarantee sightings even if the tour is operated.
Whale Watching on Faxaflói Bay
his whale watching tour takes you to Faxafloi Bay on iceland’s west coast, home to a unique variety of Minke whale, as well as Humpbacks, Harbour Porpoise and White-beaked dolphins which are all common sights on this trip. There is also an amazingly diverse array of birdlife in the area including the Puffin, Arctic Tern, Gannet and many varieties of Gull. After the cruise you can explore the Whale Exhibition Room which is set in an old capelin-fishing vessel that has been transformed into an information centre on whales and seabirds. The most common whales in the winter are dolphins, humpback whales and killer whales, hardly any minke whales have been seen from November through March. For your comfort and warmth, we have special suits on board we can lend you, but we do advise you to wear warm clothes. We also offer hot drinks and light refreshments in our on-board café. Alternatively, you can sit inside the boat in the warmth, where you can enjoy the view from large windows.

The Golden Circle Afternoon - Gullfoss & Geysir
First stop is Thingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament was first established in 930 AD, making it the oldest known functioning parliament in the world and has recently gained the distinction of being heritage listed by UNESCO. Thingvellir is a site of historical, cultural and geological importance as it marks the spot where the American and European tectonic plates meet, and these continents are gradually drifting apart. The tour carries onto take you to see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, before viewing Geysir – a hot spring erupting from below the Earth’s crust. This is thought to be the oldest known geyser and one of the best examples of this phenomenon in the world.
