BBC Symphony Orchestra
The BBC Symphony Orchestra continues its Barbican season this April with music by Beethoven, Lutoslawski and Christopher Rouse. Rising star Joshua Weilerstein conducts the orchestra, with Jonathan Biss performing Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ piano concerto to start the evening off. The UK premiere of Rouse’s Prospero’s Rooms follows, with the piece’s musical narrative drawing inspiration from Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death and Leonid Andreyev’s symbolist play The Black Maskers. The evening comes to a close with Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra, showcasing some dazzling virtuosity from the BBC SO as they perform the stylised take on Polish folk melodies.
