Fishing novices can get to grips with the sport against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales with a half day of tuition. The sessions cover the use of overhead-cast trout rod, a spey cast salmon rod, or even double-casting spey rods, as well as catching methods such as floating lines and sinking lines, retrieves, recognition of what is hatching and where to cast. Fly fishing participants are able to take one rainbow or blue trout home, with the option to learn how to fillet the fish before leaving, while the rest of the catch gets released back into the water.

The Merchant

Helwith Bridge Fly Fishery provides a 4.5-acre, 30 ft deep spring-fed lake within the rolling Yorkshire countryside, complete with views of Pen-y-ghent. The water is home to various types of trout, including triploid, blue, golden, brown and rainbow, with group events and tuition catered for alongside the fishing itself. The site also features on-site parking and flies available for purchase, as well as a fishing hut with wood burner and cooker.
